Headaches
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been suffering headaches for three weeks with no relief, how long is it normal to have a headache with fibromyalgia? Ive also been suffering with nausea and vomiting for weeks now. Should i see my GP what are the next steps for headaches, they do not get any better with my 30/500mg painkillers.

If this is something that you do not usually get and it has lasted for 3 weeks then it is best to get your GP to refer you for a CT Scan just to rule out anything more sinister and to do some blood tests aswell. But if it's any consolation this happened to me at the start of my illness when I was 18, I am now 42. The most dominant symptoms for me were unbearable banging headache that would not go away it was always there acompanied by constant ringing in my ears and feeling very dizzy and nausea and vomiting. I tried everything to get a diagnosis but unfortunately because Fibro was not taken seriously back then so I did not actually get diagnosed til 35 by which point because my illness had gone untreated for so long I had all sorts of other problems and was told that I was unlikely to ever recover. But this is how my illness started and I was repete fly fobbed off and told I was just depressed when I knew my symptoms were v real.

I have had heachaches since I was 19. At one time I got was put to sleep and given injections at the very bottom of my skull. They injections worked from 3 to 4 months. My current pain doctor has been doing cortisone injections at the top of my neck. They aren't very effective now. However, I have been using a tens unit and putting leads on my neck. It has been very effective.

Yes and no. In many cases researchers have found patients with fibromyalgia also suffer from other diseases/ailments. These being things like ibs, reynoids, depression, anxiety and chronic migraines. So while your fibro may not be the cause of the headaches, it may not exactly help them either. I actually have had chronic complicated migraines far before I ever felt my fibromyalgia symptoms. When I get a migraine, my neck and shoulders flare which leads to my tmj to flare. The migraines alone can cause me to black out entirely, become disoriented walking(almost like a drunk room spinning kind of feeling) and nausea which leads to loss of appetite. The nausea, depending on the severity of the migraine, can cause vomiting.

Please, schedule an appt. to see your GP.
He needs to know about your headaches.
Make sure you document when headaches started. How often you get them, and the severity, 1-10, so that he can diagnose you more readily.
Especially, the nausea, etc. Maybe they are migraines.
My Best!

I get get migraines and my dr. put me on topimax and it has worked for me. When I get a headache now I take warm showers, use a heating pad on my neck, or I take arthritis strength tylenol. Headache are a very common symtpom of fibro. I use to do the injections and they stopped working and finally had to have surgery on neck because of pinched nerves however this did not take the headaches away. The only thing I have found that has given me relief has been the topimax. I very rarely get a headache.
