Working From Home
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I need to continue to work to take care of myself, my question is, has anyone started " work from home" jobs? I was thnking about medical transcribing but that is alot of typing. My work experience is medical office/ billing.

I work from home as a web and graphic designer.. probs not allowed to put my website here though... I have around 80 clients, and they are all understanding as are in the spiritual industry. (not religious). I work around my 'stuff' and can work in bed anytime too. I can control all of my surroundings and just live with my kitty. So I am very lucky and this is the only way I could work.

@A MyFibroTeam Member - I did medical transcription for 3 orthopedic doctors. It is a tough job. There are times when you cannot make out what they are saying and, being in the same office as they are, it wasn't too bad. To do medical transcription without being in the same office would be dangerous. If you can't get a word here and there you can always find out from the doctor. However, if you are doing medical transcribing from home - - they bring the work to you. Imagine trying to transcribe from these Indian doctors with their accents..

I did it for 10 years and truly loved it. One of the gals in our office does transcription at home but it's court records. That to me would be very interesting.

With Fibromyalgia and the way the fatigue hits - - is difficult to even think of working. This illness takes our life and turns it completely around.

I had to build a website for the music business I had with my ex.. it's where I learned how to do it. I had no intention of doing it years after we divorced, but met someone on a date in 2010, who asked to me look at their website and it went from there. I built them a new one and got a few of their clients.. the big shift was doing my first website for a spiritual client (a medium). She was the first and that industry is very niche, and quite easy to get clients... because everyone knows nearly everyone in the industry in Australia. I have only every used social media and word of mouth to get my clients. I do have a few 'normal' businesses, but 90% are alternative people and businesses....
The reason it works is I don't offer more than I can do, so whilst I do everything (graphic design and their websites) I don't do shopping cart websites, databases, anything else that requires a web developer.. I keep it simple yet professional. My websites are a little like an art project, and each suited to the client, but simple and nice to look at. They are completely coded properly, but more like a home cooked meal, than a take away meal... meaning I build them from the ground up, establish a long term relationship with the client, and work with them for years onward. Instead of just building and seeing the client on their way with no support.
My clients all understand and accept my limitations and I work 15-20 hours a week. Lots of my clients have their own health issues, and understand that things get done in their own right time... I have rarely felt picked on or had anyone upset with me, which helps amazingly.. those that do give me hell are asked to move on.
Without having this niche market, I don't think I could ever work like I do.. it makes all the difference as they really care about me and my stuff as well as believing in my work and skills. If you look up spiritual web design you should find me pretty easily... don't think I can post my email here.

NeriK, would you please share more about how you learned your job and how long you've been doing it, to have a client base? I have known a few people who went to school for are or marketing and tried that long of job but never got anywhere with it, it sounds like you have a niche. I do website maintenance for one client as a volunteer, and admin a Facebook group large and active enough that it needs tending several times a day. I do these jobs out of love and I've always wondered if there aren't similar jobs I could be paid for. Like you say, it's ideal because I can do it when I can do it, and even do it from bed!

I had just registered to train for a new work-from-home career in medical billing and coding, when my symptoms went from a little bit miserable to completely unmanageable - I was way too tired and unable to focus to even get through the first chapter, I kept starting it over and then finally gave it up. I'm still thinking if I can get to a point of being able to sustain at least a 4-hr shift that I could do Amazon or another company's call center job from home - it doesn't pay much but it would be better than nothing!
