Members shared mixed experiences with gastric bypass and sleeve surgeries in response to someone considering the procedure, with some noting significant initial weight loss that worked well when paired with dietary commitment, while others cautioned about serious complications including malabsorption and kidney issues that led one member's daughter to seek reversal. Several members offered alternative approaches worth exploring first, including consulting a bariatric program's support group to learn about different surgical options, working with a naturopath or functional medicine doctor for thyroid concerns, and trying elimination diets like gluten-free, sugar-free, or HCG protocols that have helped some lose 35+ pounds. A recurring theme was the importance of being your own advocate, thoroughly researching potential side effects before choosing an irreversible procedure, and recognizing that sustainable results require long-term lifestyle changes regardless of the path chosen.

Look at all the possible side affects and make sure you feel it would be worth doing even if you get the side affects. These surgeries cannot be reversed if something goes wrong!
Try going to a healthfood store and getting yourself on a quality, high dose of Thyroid from there. You should also get some nutrition and herbal medicine counseling to educate yourself. Most healthfood stores will help you with any questions and may give you some good advice on what to combine and try for your symptoms!

My daughter had gastric bypass. It only complicated her symptoms. She has malabsorption from it and has kidney disease possibly as a result. She is looking to get it reversed. She also has Fibro and scoliosis with migraines.

@A MyFibroTeam Member I'm kinda surprised the no sugar and no gluten didn't work as well. I've heard that for some cutting trans fats and msg worked. But I would still strongly recommend the dietitian as a first option along with a person who specializes in natural medicine. The gastric bypass is to me kinda drastic. I need to lose about 70 myself so I understand the frustration especially since I had already lost the weight once before. You could also look at the HCG diet as an option as well. It's designed for people looking to lose a lot of weight. I did it and lost a lot and kept it off for a while but then life (mainly work) got in the way. If I had the money I would do it now but until I find a job have to be careful with the spending. But as soon as I start working again I will do it. Check it out on YouTube and do your research. You can ask me questions about it too.
