Is Anyone Having Problems With GERD And Esophageal Spasms? And If So Have You Found Anything That Helps Ease The Spasms.

I am having painfully esophageal spasms and lots of heartburn and stomach upset. I have tried some home remedies and am now trying a blood pressure medicine.

YES YES YES!!!

Sorry I thought I was alone! I have bad reflux and have done since I have been on lots of pills. If I bend over I get a mouth full of sick every Time! I wake in the night choking on vomit despite on double dose of meds.
I have a multitude of diagnosis (read my story as my fingers won't type much more) but I have neurological conditions that cause tremors and spasms all over my body but when I'm eating I get really bad spasms in my throat/ esophegus, if I was a panicky person I would probably choke as it often goes the wrong way and I wait until the spasm has past (probably up to a minute) then cough the food up. I did it one night when taking my oramorph and I could feel the oramorph burning my lungs and kept coughing up gunk tasting of oramorph for hrs so I know I'm right. Luckily I didn't get a chest infection just wheezed for a while. When it spasms I have to just say to myself it will pass in a minute and try my hardest to just relax and let the moment pass, it's very hard to do as it bloody hurts but also very scary when you have food stuck in there!
My son who was premature had severe gerd and he had to have a big op (more easy on adults) called a nissens fundoplication but I'm avoiding that as much as I can as I know the after effects! Basically it wraps your stomach around your esophegus so you can never be sick again, my son can't burp or be sick, some people manage to undo them but he hasn't and he has had multiple endoscopes to stretch his wrap as he feels sick and used to wretch for hrs on end to the point he would pass out in pain, he was/is tube fed so we can drain his stomach via his feeding tube which gives him some relief but sometimes you need to be sick! We all know we feel better after being sick sometimes but he doesn't have that and in the last month he is eating enough after 13yrs to finally have his feeding tube removed so just waiting for a surgery date!

The suggestions are get on meds if you aren't, raise the end of your bed with books so your head is slightly higher, might not sound like much but can make a huge difference. If the meds don't work ask to change as there are different types of meds out there.

I am finding some relief by using Pepsid Complete 2 or 3 times a day...

I do ..i do not know by esophageal spasm you mean Globus, like your throat is getting tight ...like someone has their hands around your neck tight? If so yes. And reflux but more the pill caught in the throat feeling and burning. I take a zantac and that usually helps. I had LPR for yrs and finally got it under control and stopped my Prilosec and Zantac but recently with this flare it has caused this reflux and burning.

I suffered from Esophageal spasms for many years. They would put me in ICU or PC because they thought it was a heart attack. I went through a living hell with all kinds of tests. I have been taking Nexium and Valium and have not had another attack in many years.

Thank God those days are gone. It was horrible. I would get the attacks in church and they would have to call an ambulance. Oh I thank God it is over.

I now have Fibromyalgia and Lupus, plus COP,Glaucoma to name a few.

When I saw Esophageal Spasms - it brought back so many memories. I am so grateful to God that He helped me get through those horrible days.

Take care. Keep calm and Trust God.

For me I am finding that dietary choices make a difference.. working on healthy changes. Enjoying the challenge. Pairing makes big difference.
