I've been to several doctors but none of them seem to help. Recently I started smelling smoke/dirty ash tray smell. I don't know if this is a symptom of fibro or if something else is going on. Im wondering if seeing a Neurologist would be a waste of time and money?

Members shared varied experiences in response to someone asking whether seeing a neurologist for phantom smoke smells associated with fibromyalgia would be worthwhile. Several members described experiencing similar phantom or heightened smells themselves, with some attributing it to fibromyalgia-related hypersensitivity and others linking it to GERD, noting that certain foods and drinks become intolerable. A recurring theme was the validation that these sensory experiences are real and common within the fibro community, with one member crediting their neurologist as genuinely helpful while others managed symptoms primarily through their family doctors.

I got told by my specialist that phantom smells are a symptom of fibro and very common. I also got told they're not necessarily phantom smells, they are most likely there somewhere and because of our hyper sensitivity to smells we smell it but others can't. I was once convinced my house was on fire, turned out there was a fire miles away but no one else could smell it

@A MyFibroTeam Member, I've always had a sensitive sense of smell. I could pull into someone's driveway and tell you what they are having for dinner. Sometimes it's a curse having a good sniffer. But this smell is not coming from my house, I don't smoke and I mainly smell it at night when I'm laying down going to bed.

When I researched "smelling smoke" several people with GERD said they had this problem. I have GERD and its really bad now...but I also read some scary things about smelling things that arnt there. I have an appointment next week, I will let you know what he says...if I don't cancel it 😕
