I have applied for disability benefits. Today I was notified I have an appointment with a psychologist next week. I do have mental health diagnoses and have been treated for many years. What can I expect from the appointment?

Members reassured someone facing a psychologist exam for disability benefits that the appointment is straightforward and nothing to worry about, typically involving memory tests (like recalling three words), simple yes-or-no questions, and basic cognitive exercises such as counting backwards by sevens. Several members shared that having a documented history of mental health treatment, ongoing therapy, and regular doctor visits strengthens a disability claim, with one member recounting how their psychologist was supportive and even suggested getting a lawyer if denied. A recurring theme was the importance of being honest during the exam, showing up as you truly are rather than trying to appear healthier, and trusting that the process is designed to help document the reality of living with your conditions.

Good point. When I feel better, I put on makeup and try to look normal. Thanks for the info. I guess it's better for them to see you on a bad day, it's just so hard to go anywhere at that time. Hugs

I had this in January (requested by disability). I was worried about it but it was nothing. As we were walking in his office he was looking at the form I had filled out. He must of been looking at my list of meds and said Boy, you do have a lot of things going on. He had my daughter come in later and was talking to her about how hard it is for people with this disease. He told me that if I get denied this time, to get a lawyer because I definitely have a case. That made me feel better. I waited 3 weeks thinking I'd get the decision soon but then they sent me more appointments to go to- pulmonary and a physical which the last one was Wed. Now to wait again. Best wishes.

They always do that. It's standard procedure

Ditto + counting backwards from 100 by 7's. You will do just fine. Answer honestly and relax.

I have seen psychologists, a psychoanalyst and psychiatrists off and on for years prior to this diagnosis. Rough childhood, rape, an alcoholic father threatening to kill us though divorced from mom the first time, etc.

That might actually help you a lot.

My dad was miraculously delivered by the time I was 20. He was so thankful. So was I.

Let us know how you do. God bless?

I was also diagnosed with PTSD by a therapist I was seeing.
