Most of my pain is focused in my back so I'm pretty much attached to a heating pad. I started to get discoloration (blotches of white and red skin) on my back. The doctor said it's normal and would go away after a while if I stopped using it, however that's not really an option for me. Had this happened to anyone else? If so, is there anyway to get rid of it? Thanks

Members strongly cautioned against overusing heating pads after someone developed red and white skin discoloration, explaining that prolonged direct heat can cause burns that may become permanent if not addressed. Several members shared practical alternatives and safer approaches, including wrapping the pad in flannel or cloth to protect skin, using lower heat settings, switching to moist heat like hot wet towels instead of dry heat for chronic pain, trying ice packs or menthol creams like Biofreeze, and layering lightweight fleece clothing to retain warmth without pressure. A recurring theme was the importance of taking the discoloration seriously as a warning sign while also acknowledging the community's shared struggle of needing heat therapy to manage daily pain.

I have it too. I go through three heating pads a year. Scared me to death until others said they got it.

Heating pads not great to be used constantly. Layer your clothes is the best remedy lightweight fleece micro fleece is very good as it repels moisture ad lets your body breathe but still keeping you very warm. Too much weight in clothes presses on our trigger points and makes pain much worse.

I have better results with ice packs, or alternating ice and heat. I also use the menthol cream (generic icy hot) before going to bed or roll on Biofreeze if I don't want the menthol smell (WalMart has it now).

Try massage oil grapeseed and add essential oils like ginger and Rosemary this will put heat into your skin and with no side effects. 5 drops of each oil to 100ml of the carrier grapeseed oil. Massage well into your skin avoid applying to your face area.
