Ask your doc for Voltaren Gel. Rub it in deep three times a day, and at bedtime or how prescribed. Do you take a prescribed water pill, like HCTZ or Lasix? Ask your doc for Rx.
Also, can you get to a heated pool for water therapy? It really would help; also a Jacuzzi, hot sauna, and relaxing bath with Epsom salt and essentials.
It's easy to gain more weight with our disease as we are not producing energy.
Commit to better nutrition, food choices, and lots of water with lemon. Steamed, boiled, or broiled meats and veggies help in so many ways. Get great ideas and recommendations online and at your health food store.
While sitting, do leg extensions. It will strengthen your knees and hamstrings, helping you walk with better ease. You'll eventually hear and feel less crackling of tendons rubbing against cartilage.
Ask your doc or physical therapist about alternating cold/hot packs to your knees.
Be as busy as possible so that you are moving, otherwise, pain gets worse.

I have issues with both my knees and am not heavy set. My left knee is very painful and I'm waiting to have surgery on it.

BTW, has your m.d. requested knee xrays?
Maybe Hyalgan injections can help. These injections are for osteoarthritis.
Ask him/her to refer you to physical therapy.
Six weeks or so will not only help your knees, but will get you out more, and help you focus more on you moving forward with health and nutrition.
