Members shared diverse approaches to managing severe anxiety, with many describing how theirs intensifies at night or when overstimulated. Several members found relief through a combination of medication like Ativan, Xanax, or Effexor and non-medication strategies such as physical grounding techniques, fidget objects, walking, breathing exercises, and considering emotional support animals. A recurring theme was the importance of finding what works for each person while being cautious about benzodiazepine dependency, with some members expressing a strong desire to manage anxiety without medication and others acknowledging that their prescribed treatments, while not perfect, have been essential for functioning day to day.

I also take buspirone (generic to BuSpar) but take 15mg 3x a day. I'm also taking 0.5mg of Xanax mourning and night. It doesn't help completely, but I can't imagine life without it!

P.S. Also try calming breathing exercises; slowly inhale through your nose, hold for 3 seconds, then exhale very slowly, (a little puff out at a time) through pursed lips. Repeat 3 times or so... it does seem to help a bit. :)

I have really bad anxiety. I find that physical grounding works the best. I use fidget objects and take them with me. Mine is bad when I'm overstimulated. Also breathing, closing your eyes and tilting your head back if it's not too hurtful. Best of luck!

Yes, I used to have severe anxiety; it was constant and scary. My doc prescribed Lorazepam ("Ativan") and I went to a Psychologist for a while too. The Lorazepam worked immediately and was a life saver for me! I only take it on occasion now, but at that time it was 2x per day for about 2 months, then weaned off under my doctors care. Best of luck to you, I know how awful it feels.

I have occasional anxiety but while going through withdrawal from Cymbalta it was out of sight. I was taking Alprazolam (Xanax) 2-3 mg/day. Benzos are addictive so be careful if you are taking them. There is withdrawal from them as well. They are only meant to be used short term. Benadryl can be effective dealing with anxiety but if taken constantly can become ineffective.
