Pain Meds
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was wondering what pain meds you were prescribed (I'm talking about anything that has codein, or morphine or dilaudid). Sometimes the pain is unbearable and I can't lay in bed all day (even if I could it would be hard because of the pain). I actually have to study all the time... I quite often wish I could take something to ease the pain at least a little bit (because we all know tylenols or advils don't help at all...)

I take a low dose (10mg) of amitriptyline, as well as 300mg of gabapentin daily. This has worked fairly well for me. I don't know what the laws are like where you live but I have found that marijuana can bring me relief when I have already taken all the pain pills I can take for six hours and I'm still in pain. I use a CBD tincture. CBD is the chemical in marijuana that provides relief of pain and nausa. THC is the chemical that causes a high. So the point of getting an exclusively CDB tincture is that there is no high, so you can function normally and have pain relief.

Suggest you look at your stress levels, see a psych to learn how to reduce your stresses. A lot of our recurring pain is simply being stressed out and reacting to things. Look at diet, exercise, physio etc., these meds are not going to do you any favours long term..

I use a tincture that is mint flavoured so it leaves me feeling as though I've just had a breath mint. I take two squirts from a pump dispenser bottle under the tongue, held for a minute then swallowed. I find it to be a great help. There are a great many CBD tinctures out there and one might work better for you than another. But this is the one that I used with success through a year of college.

Let me see... I've been prescribed Co-Codamol 30/500 since 2001 for the arthritis (sacro-iliac joint originally) and a variety and combination of Diclofenac Sodium (hell on the guts after a while) Naproxen (not sure if it's called that in NA) Methocarbamol, Piroxicam Gel, Amitriptyline for a very short while (2-3 doses, it knocked me totally stupid and made me sick) and more recently Fentanyl patches.
All told these merely take the edge off the pain as it's been for 5-6 years now, worse without but definitely not nearly gone with... and in the case of the Fentanyl, if I take off a patch (usually when I shower) and forget to put on a replacement for a few hours or even overnight, I know all about it... returning pain at full levels and withdrawal too.
(I've a bunch of other things for other things too, Esomeprazole, Stemetil and Tegretol CR and various antidepressants over the years, though none are painkillers or anti-imflammatories)
I'm to be prescribed either Gabapentin, Pregabalin or back to Amitriptyline again in the next week or two (if I can get a GP appointment in the run up to Christmas) after my rheumatology consult last week, and also some tests coming up too.
So, a lot of pills and not always much relief...
All the best and go easy and light with your back, take care.
