Members shared the heartbreaking decision to leave careers they loved due to fibromyalgia pain becoming unbearable, with professions including nursing, midwifery, hairstyling, and cleaning, and many describing the choice as deeply emotional and traumatic. Several members discussed navigating the disability application process, noting that initial denials are common and often require hiring a lawyer and appealing multiple times, with one member's approval taking four years, while workplace disability insurance paying 66% of salary proved invaluable during the wait. A recurring theme was the grief of losing not just income but identity and purpose, balanced by the practical reality that continuing to work was simply no longer possible, and members encouraged persistence in appeals and exploring part-time or work-from-home options when feasible.

I applied for disability last summer and was denied but I turned it over to a lawyer and now my appeal hearing is next month. The only time I've ever taken off work was to have my kids, so it was very emotional for me to finally make my mind up that I couldn't do it anymore.

When I got sick January 2014 I was a full time hair stylist/ makeup artist. I had to stop working because I could not physically do the job anymore. It broke my heart completely. I applied for disability and was denied immediately. I later found a job where I work from home part time now. If I ever lose this job I will apply again for disability.. Although out of all of my friends with fibro that have applied NONE of them have been accepted. Frustrating.

It's definitely an emotional decision.I had to stop working at 41yrs. old!It really wasn't what I wanted to do so it was pretty traumatic for me.I'd only ever wanted to be a Nurse and to realize at age 41 that I could no longer do that job was pretty traumatizing.

I had to give up my life as a midwife, I was gutted but I can't care for myself, let alone labouring women, I miss it so much. In th UK we have sickness benefit called esa which I get, also I qualified for PIP, which is personal independence payment for people with disability xxx
