Members shared a wide variety of strategies for managing fibromyalgia-related insomnia, with many finding that getting out of bed and doing something relaxing like watching TV, reading, or listening to meditation music works better than lying awake in pain. Several members described their medication routines, including prescriptions like Ambien, Trazodone, Elavil, and Seroquel, as well as natural alternatives like melatonin, valerian root, and Benadryl, with mixed results and a recurring note that what works for one person may not work for another. A central theme was learning not to fight sleeplessness, accepting the unpredictable sleep patterns that come with fibromyalgia, and finding personal routines that bring comfort and relaxation without added stress.

I downloaded the podcast, Sleep With Me. It's story telling by a guy with a very soothing voice. I use one earbud as I sleep on my side. I find this very heloful.

I've got friends who have fibro who get really upset when they can't sleep. For me, I just go with it. If I'm tossing and turning, I just get up, read, watch a little tv, or anything else that helps me relax. When/if i start to feel sleepy, I go back to bed and I am usually able to sleep. The key is to not push trying to sleep. On days when I know I have to get up early for an appointment, I rarely sleep well. I will wake up every hour or so until the alarm goes off. It is part of what is normal for me. If I get 5-7 hours of sleep a night I do ok. Less is a bit more difficult but doable as long as I can sleep most nights. One bad night is no big deal.

This is a quote from the book, Reviving the Broken Marionette by Maja Haavistro. "Benadryl inhibits the reuptake of serotoninand some SSRIs were developed based on diphenhydramine. Serotonin plays a role in pain perception."
