I know a lot of fibro people suffer from heightened senses or sensory overload when it comes to lights, sounds, noises, tastes etc and occasionally I suffer from this too but I'm wondering if anyone also suffers from the opposite where all your senses have become quite dulled?

Most of the time I can't smell anything, unless it's really strong and I hold it up to my nose and inhale deeply. Most of my food tastes pretty bland unless I pack it full of spice and I have to have music and the tv up… read more

Members connected over the confusing experience of dulled senses with fibromyalgia, with many sharing that they struggle to smell anything unless it's very strong, find food tastes bland without heavy seasoning, and need the TV or music turned up loud to hear properly. Several members described the frustrating flip side of also experiencing sensory overload, including auditory overwhelm in busy environments, ringing in the ears, difficulty processing speech when there's background noise, and physical symptoms like headaches and balance issues in crowded shopping centers. A recurring theme was the relief of realizing these sensory struggles are fibro-related rather than signs of going crazy, with members expressing both sadness over losing simple pleasures like tasting food and gratitude for finding a community that truly understands.

I am one of those people who turns the radio off when I am driving in high traffic areas. I find it distracting. I believe I have had fibro long before I even knew it was a thing > When my Doctor told me I had it I told him that he was only saying that because he couldn't find anything to substantiate my symptoms.. I didn't want anybody to know I had it because I thought they would think I was a chronic complainer. There have been many times where I would just sit or stand and not take anything in. Hearing things but not ingesting them. I thought I was going crazy or having mini seizures. Now I know its "fibro fog"! Some of the meds I find make it worse. Lyrica was great for the pain but for clarity of mind. I had to stop using it. Damned if you and damned if you don't! I try to be positive and tell myself there are others that are in worse conditions than I. I am happy to have found this group! Makes me feel like I'm not alone!!

I have what I call auditory overload...if I have my family in my house and everybody is talking with the TV on, or at work at a busy office I can't stand it!! I think it's worse when I'm tired. Then there is the ringing in the ears, so my hearing level has dropped, so the TV has to be loud for me to be able to hear it. I can't hear whispers like I used to. Unbelievable!! My sense of smell and taste is pretty good for now.

Hiya, I can relate to this my dear, i go from one extreme to the other and a lot of smells make me feel so sick. I too need the tv louder etc I guess the best way to describe it is like aging 80 years suddenly. I feel so old and I'm not even 40. Be kind to your needs and don't let yourself sweat the small stuff u no? All the best x

I have the same thing, can only smell bad things or extremely strong and usually bad. I can't taste anything either unless it's super sweet. Totally ridiculous situation, I could never be a food judge!
