Is A Neurologist Really Able To Prescribe Psych Meds?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had went to my neurologist told her my problems which i thought i was going for just headaches, she told me because i have not just headaches but i also have fibromyalgia and depression that i had two options which was cymbalta or effexor. She said my symptoms are like married to each other so i went with effexor cause i never had it before. But the longer I'm on this medicine the more i feel its not working for me. Should i have went with my psychiatrist instead since that is his field?

It"s really trial and error, what does for one, doesn't do for another. I take Lyrics morning and evening and for me it helps with pain. Good luck x

You may have seen ads where they talk about cymbalta as a non-narcotic pain reliever. For some people it works really well and any doctor can prescribe it not just a psychiatrist even though it can help with mood. I am currently tapering off of it because it did not help me and I do not like the side effects...

If it helps....I have been a psychotherapist for many years and work as part of a mental health team with psychiatrists. Many medications have multiple uses. Lyrica was initially an anti-seizure medication but they discovered it worked well for certain kinds of pain which is why so many of us take it. What is important to me is that I am seeing doctors I trust.

Neurologist goes together with psychiatrist they can do both but usually they don't do alot of psychiatric stuff. Now the medicine they gave you a choice on is also used for fibromyalgia. If the one isn't working maybe you should try the other one. Just call your doctor and talk to them. Good luck

Hi Taneisha, I was on effexor also and it didnt help. But Cymbalta has helped a bit. It is very expensive though. Just keep trying and you'll find one that helps. Nothing is 100 per cent. It is alot of meds to take and my stomach is upset from them too.
