Is Daily Medication Necessary?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

From all that I have read, medication only treats symptoms and doesn't treat actual fibro. It doesn't stop flares, but may slow them. I don't like taking a lot of medication or dealing with side effects if it can be avoided. Any one have any experience with only medicating during flares?

Bente, one big thing I am learning is no 2 people have all the same symptoms or treatments. Seems fibro affects everyone differently. Same with treatments.
The more questions and answers give me more knowledge to ask informed questions of my Dr. Hopefully, to better formulate a plan of treatment. I am getting very angry finding a majority of Drs would rather hand out pills and move you along than work with you.

I hope I am making sense...

I do every day but that is me and some are for other reasons besides Fibro. I find if I do not take it I am in more pain than when I do take it and my doctors keep making sure I do take them as I have a very low pain tolerance.

@DawnWindngale, per your question about diet. No, but am finding some success in limiting carbs for breakfast and lunch while eating protein of some sort for those meals, and portion control/healthy options for dinner. If I start with a high carb breakfast, I crave carbs. This is working for me, and am losing weight. I try to limit my dairy as well.

Massage is so helpful but painful, especially deep tissue massage. I too have skin sensitivity so the massage therapist is careful to use a lot of oil so the skin does not pull as much. To be honest, when I get a massage, that is the time I use the most pain medication, combined with a muscle relaxer. It is still painful but I can stay on the table. Recently Oregon legalize Marijuana so I have begun to use it prior to my massage. It works well, although I have discovered inhaling it is better than edibles for this purpose.

Massage will get the knots out of my muscles that often turn into trigger points, and lengthens the muscles that have become overly tight. My hip muscles are a chronic problem area for me and if I don't do this, I will get out of alignment and start limping, causing muscle problems on the other side.

I hope you get insurance approval for acupuncture. It too is a way to release overly tight muscles. Be sure to find an acupuncturist that will place the needles in areas other than qI spots. Cupping is also helpful to get the myelin unclogged.

I tried stopping my meds for a month and found it was ok till I had a flare up that went overboard and affected my whole body I was in so much pain, screaming and crying all the time I stopped sleeping all together and my body became stiff I struggled moving so my wife pleaded with me to accept the side affects as this was just too much so I started them again it took 2 months for that flare up to stop and to get back into a sleeping pattern again which is never much sleep but enough for me.

Through that experience I will never ever go without meds again I was so depressed I wanted to die so the pain would stop my doctor told me off lol when I told him he said I should never go cold turkey it can be a shock to your body and I should of consulted him first hahaha oooops.

Everyone is different and has different meds and side effects and lvls of pain and pain thresholds always wein off meds and consult your doctor first and be prepared for the worst you never know you could be OK x

@A MyFibroTeam Member, that's wonderful! You'll be amazed when you find out what it has done for people and what it can do for you. Check out leafly.com also (has an app as well) they are the best site for info on all things marijuana and CBD oil. You can learn about every strain, medical benefits, reviews from people who use them, articles on illnesses treated by marijuana and CBD, the chemical properties that make them work, how to use them, what forms they come in, everything really. They leave no stone unturned. But having a friend who's an expert is really fantastic so you can get some great personal advice. I wish you luck with it. I hope if you try it you find it helpful. :)
