Members openly discussed how Cymbalta and similar medications affect their ability to climax and enjoy intimacy, with experiences ranging widely from complete loss of libido and numbness to no issues at all or even increased desire over time. Several members shared practical strategies that have helped, including switching to medications like Wellbutrin or Celexa that may have fewer sexual side effects, using relaxation techniques such as aromatherapy and massage to reduce pain and anxiety before intimacy, trying natural lubricants like coconut oil, and working on the mental aspect by staying relaxed and not overthinking the inability to climax. A recurring theme was the importance of open communication with both doctors and partners, recognizing that chronic pain and fatigue often interfere with intimacy just as much as medications do, and giving oneself grace while navigating these deeply personal challenges.

The team has really laid out some good ideas. I know that client's I have seen in private practice that were on the SNRI's had difficulty in this area. I would talk to the prescribing doctor and possibly reduce SNRI and add low dose of SSRI and then see if you can tolerate the new antidepressant and switch over to Celexa or Wellbutrin as @A MyFibroTeam Member mentioned would be a possible solution. In addition, anxiety and pain are also problems for enjoying intimacy. If you can find ways to "downtime" through meditation, warm bath, and making sure that there is not a TV in the bedroom - or computer. Setting up the bedroom with auroma therapy, natural violet linen spray, candle, sound machine and/or music. I know my poor husband has to massage my body just to try to get the pain to reduce. I use a message oil with arnica and lemmon scent. Coconut oil is a natural way to help with lubrication which is impacted post-menopause. The most important thing is to keep communication up regarding how you are feeling and things that might help to relax you.

Hi, Teresa!
Really great question!
I suggest that you ask your doctor if it's time to switch from Cymbalta, an SSRI, to Welbutrin or it's generic, or others in the same class.
Naturally, due to our depression, our brains are challenged, rather than ready for the wonderful anticipation of sexual pleasure and all that we can experience physically and emotionally.
Our decrease in self esteem, confidence, body image, etc., also affect arousal. Importantly, improving our appreciation for self can also help in the bedroom, thereby, reducing or eliminating any frustration.
My Best,
Leticia

For me Cymbalta has been horrible for
my sex life. I have very little desire and although I can have an orgasm, it is barely pleasurable. It's like I am numb. I have taken Celexa and Wellbutrin before and they did not have this side effect. I am tapering off Cymbalta right now to switch to another one.

Mine had left as well, I take so many medications I'm not sure which one is doing it or if it's just me. I don't think about it, I don't worry about it, I don't care about it and haven't for about 5 years. I hope you find your answers and that you get your orgasms back. I will say they are nice when you can have one or two or three....lol Happy Hunting :-)
