Does Anyone Else Smell Things That Aren't There?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I know hyper sensitivity to light, sound, smells etc is common with Fibro but I randomly smell strong and usually pungent smells that then seem to disappear when I try to find where they're coming from. Does anyone else experience this? I feel like I'm going crazy and I get paranoid that my house, or worse, I, smell and I can't tell :/

@A MyFibroTeam Member. Yes it's so frustrating trying to figure this out! Sometimes I'll experience phantom smells like cigarettes for months then it just stops. My coworker is the same. I know we all have heightened senses and can smell even the slightest odor but to smell something that isn't even there baffles me. ENT did scope in sinuses. Told me to use fluticasone nasal spray. He told me without the spray the smells would become permanent and would affect my sense of taste. I still get the episodes even using the spray. And you know, there are some smells that I swear I can taste if that makes any sense to anyone. Especially if I walk passed a "Bath and Body" store I taste soap in my mouth. Does anyone else get this?

My stepdad has that. He does not have fibro, but his docs said it was related to his diabetes and he had meds to go on for it and that smell problem went away. Have you been tested for diabetes???

@CandiceWay it is odd. I haven't remembered to tell my Dr. I just forget. I am going to address this weird with him. Too bad ice cream and chocolate don't affect me the same way; I could drop a few pounds lol

I smell and taste mold. It's really weird. I could be eating the same thing everyone is eating and be the only one that tastes mold. I've learned to keep it to myself and discreetly not eat it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, it helps me feel a little less insane lol It's so hard not knowing if what I'm smelling is real or not, yesterday I smelt smoke and thought I left something on the stove and started to panic but there was nothing there :/

And I know what you mean @A MyFibroTeam Member it's never a pleasant smell, for me it's usually garbage or sewage. Chocolate or flowers would be nice :)
