I keep reading that I should keep a symptom diary to keep track of any changes or find patterns in things but I'm not sure exactly what I should include and how detailed I should be. Does anyone else keep a dairy like this? And what do you find useful to put in it?

Members shared varied approaches to keeping symptom diaries for fibromyalgia, with many tracking pain levels, medication changes, migraines, food sensitivities, and bowel patterns to identify triggers and communicate better with doctors. Several members recommended helpful tools including the My Symptom Checker app, the American Chronic Pain Association's FibroLog, custom Excel trackers, and even creative alternatives like art journaling. A recurring theme was the balance between tracking symptoms for medical insight versus dwelling on pain, with some members finding that daily journaling increased negativity while others valued it as an emotional outlet and practical tool for spotting patterns in food reactions and flare-ups.

I was told to journal pain cycles and how I did daily I found for me it was manifesting a negative me. I stopped journaling and took it day by day. I find mentally I am in a better place yes I hurt yes I have bad days but I don't have to dwell on them live each day a new one! I found I could get through the bad days a little easier with positive energy as opposed to dwelling on what was ailing me today. Manifest what you want to feel. I start with a meditation per say a quiet time every morning telling myself today is going to be a good day find a positive first wake up thought ie birds are singing, rain is dancing, sun is warm, breeze is fresh, picture myself on the ocean, on a lake a snowy mountain then map my day thank my body for being alive so I can enjoy these things then start my day may it be good or bad but journaling for me kept me in a bad mind frame. Hope this helps โ˜บ๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

Hi Lisa

I have kept several of those over the years. Mine was easier to keep diary style, but I would write meds and changes in meds down as a list, then just diarize how my day went - pain, fatigue, IBS, chemical sensitivities, reactions to meds, food, etc., Changes in diet or bowel movements, sleep patterns (or not), moods or anxiety, anything you think is important or concerning. Learn about the many symptoms
of your particular diagnosis and pay attention to those things. There's lots of info online about what to look for. Eventually you'll get knowledgable about what you generally is important for you specifically to pay attention to, as everyone's diagnosis and symptoms
May be a little or a lot different. There may be examples of diaries online, I haven't
looked but it's easy enough to check.

There's also an App for that called 'My Symptom Checker'. I just uploaded it but it looks like it can be quite helpful.

The American Chronic Pain Association has a log. Here's a link to their site:

Best of luck. I'm sure you'll get into a routine with it in no time!

I have a planner that I write down if I have a migraine and my pain scale. There are apps you can get on your phone just to keep track of fibro symptoms. But all it did was make me concentrate on what was wrong with me and the pain, instead of thinks that were right and good. I do art journaling instead. I can write about my pain, but I can write about my life too. And then I can make it into art. Good luck.

I try to keep a diary of my pain. I don't do it everyday because, let's face it, the pain is there 24/7. I do try to keep track of the worse pain, like on days that my pain level is really high. I also have costocondritis, so when that kicks up I write that down. Including what time it started, what I was doing at the time and how long it lasted. I do the same thing for migraines.

I have learned alot about what diet works best for me. Everyone's is different though. Usually, artificial sugars, artificial flavors, nitrites and nitrates (stuff usually in ham, pepperoni, and bacon especially), preservatives and artificial colors almost always have a bad effect on people suffering from fibro. I still cheat once in a awhile, but most of the time the pain isn't worth the 5 minutes of joy from eating bacon...lol
