Autoimmune / Inflammatory?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello, fellow Fibro fighters! 😊 I'm new here, and have two pretty basic questions. It seems like every source/site says something different, so once & for all...

1) Is Fibromyalgia considered to be an *autoimmune* disease?

2) Is fibro considered to be an *inflammatory* condition?

Regarding # 2, if yes, why don't NSAID's work on our pain?

I'm not newly diagnosed, but I find our disorder to be VERY complex, and confusing. I don't understand it at all! Help! Lol. Thanks. 👍

I believe it is our central nervous system from our brain an spinal cord,I am newly using a pain patch called transtec, it works on the brain and the nervous system and it works, I have tried pregabaline and lyrics and every other med used to treat fibro to no avail so if this works and it does, then it must be rite, I have no depression either which also explains the problems from the brain, what do other people think ????

Hi Angela,

The real answer at this time is that Fibro is neither an inflammatory condition nor an autoimmune disorder.

So, what is it then? Theres a ton of debate thete. Some say, it's a a disorder of Central Processing - essentially, there's an issue with how our brains process and perceive pain. One company is working on a drug for Fibro designed to out and destroy latent Herpes Zoster infection. Some think it's actually just a set of symptoms that occurs in a wide number of disorders that are going untreated. I've also read theories human growth hormone deficiency and the hippo-pittuitary-adrenal axis. And, finally, there's a possibility that it's a disease not of neurons, but of neuro glia, the other cells that make up the nervous system besides nrurons.

Sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer than that, the best researchers in the world aren't sure, unfortunately.

As far as NSAIDS, they don't work because Fibro pain isn't related to inflammation.

@A MyFibroTeam Member - Fibro used to be considered autoimmune, but there's no proof of that. If the immune system were attacking the nervous system, or connective tissue, or really any tissue in the body it would be detectable via blood test like every other autoimmune disorder.

I discovered a website that has articles on the latest research on fibromyalgia as well as chronic fatigue syndrome. It has helped me understand a lot more about our condition. They are constantly adding new articles. If you are interested, the site is http://www.cortjohnson.org/forums/resources

As far as I'm aware it's neither - just to add to the confusion! Although I stand corrected if wrong. It is interesting though as I have been prescribed an anti-inflammatory .......I look forward to seeing what others think xx
