A bit of a strange question, but it is a strange thing - for me. It is becoming more common (almost daily) for me to feel my food travel down the oesophagus once I've swallowed. This can be fine for the most part, but I am getting increasing pain when it happens. Different food types influence the level of discomfort, with toasts and bread being among the worst; so I tend to avoid. Before diagnosis with fibro, I did experience several bouts of being unable to swallow food at all, with it… read more

Members opened up about experiencing the unsettling sensation of feeling food travel down their esophagus, with many sharing that bread and toast were among the most difficult foods to swallow, sometimes causing pain or the frightening feeling of food getting stuck in the throat. Several members recommended important medical steps, including getting a swallow test to check esophageal pressure and motility, seeing a gastroenterologist for an EGD (upper endoscopy), and having thyroid levels checked, as conditions like GERD, hiatal hernia, esophageal spasms, and Nutcracker Syndrome can all cause these symptoms. A recurring theme was the practical advice to take smaller bites, chew food more thoroughly, tilt the head downward when swallowing to help open the throat, avoid heavy carbs and bread especially at night, and consider trying a gluten-free diet, which some members found helpful for managing fibromyalgia-related digestive issues.

I felt like that when I ate a lot of carbs, specifically breads,. I try to avoid some of those food now especially at night. Then I get a lot of heartburn.

I notice it with my meds. I usually have to drink more water. What if you were to drink a full glass before you ate so that food would break down better. They say a gluten free diet is best for fibro. I do notice if I eat more carbs I get more indigestion.

I've been avoiding 'heavy foods' this week and it's not been too bad, thankfully. However I am not feeling very hungry of late and finding it difficult to finish a bigger meal. I am tending to graze and snack a bit more. Thanks for your responses though, it is useful to read x

I have trouble swallowing a good deal of the time too. It's not like I'm choking I can breathe but it's really hard to get it to go down and can be very painful
