Members overwhelmingly confirmed that mood swings are a common and deeply frustrating part of living with fibromyalgia, with many describing how chronic pain makes them irritable, quick to anger, or tearful, often lashing out at loved ones and then feeling guilty afterward. Several members shared that antidepressants like Cymbalta, Prozac, Wellbutrin, and mood stabilizers like Lamictal have helped manage the emotional volatility, while others mentioned that sensitivity to loud noise, poor sleep, and the exhaustion of constant pain all contribute to unpredictable moods. A recurring theme was the importance of self-awareness, communicating boundaries with family, seeking professional mental health support, and extending grace to oneself when the pain makes it impossible to be the cheerful, patient person they want to be.

When I'm in pain I can get nasty. When I'm not I tend to be manic. I'm thinking it's the energy used . Pain takes so much energy it drains us to "grumpiness" with none, our energy level soars and suddenly were running at high speed. That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Unfortunately, yes. I also have depression and anxiety. My doc said that is to be expected with the pain and all the other symptoms that come along with fibro. It seems I have less tolerance now. I do get angry when I can't do things that I used to do. I find it difficult to adjust sometimes to all the changes in my life. Rarely do I take it out on others. I bottle it all inside and it gets to the point I can't stand myself. If I yell at my son because I am in pain, it makes me feel horrible, so I just keep it to myself or talk to my fibro friends. I think depression/anxiety meds help with the mood swings. I hope you can find what you need to feel better.

So Jim...mood swings you say....Cymbalta you say...
So here's the deal (for me anyway)...I definitely suffer mood swings...they are bad during a big flare but even worse on the days that I have the CONSTANT nagging aches and fibro fog...it's like the ache just wears you down and you literally can't redirect your thoughts or feelings so things just sort of spew out...and unfortunately anyone within earshot takes the brunt of it. Of course I also suffer with Bipolar II so the Cymbalta treats the depression side of me but I also have to take a mood stabilizer (Lamictal) which helps to diffuse my anger/temper and the rest of my hypomanic symptoms. I would say that if you are taking an antidepressant (Cymbalta) and you are seeing increased anger/temper/mood problems then you most certainly should talk to your doctor. There are a LOT of us that suffer mood disorders in addition to the Fibro...once you're able to get that situated then you'll have a better handle on your swings.
Hope that helps...and/or made sense...lol!
Light and Hugs,
Cyna
