I try to drink tons of water. The problem is that oftentimes when I swallow, my drink goes down the wrong pipe and I end up coughing. Does anyone else experience this fairly regularly? I know that it happens to everyone occassionally but mine is at least on a daily basis. Thanks for any input!

Members connected over the frustrating and sometimes frightening experience of frequently choking on water and other liquids, with many confirming they face the same issue daily rather than just occasionally. Several members shared practical advice, including getting a swallow study done to assess the problem, considering an endoscopy to rule out structural issues, and using the chin tuck technique when swallowing to help liquids go down the right pipe. A recurring theme was the importance of taking this seriously and consulting with a gastroenterologist or rheumatologist, as chronic aspiration can lead to dangerous complications like aspiration pneumonia.

I worked as a respiratory therapist for 13 yrs. You need to ask your dr to do a swallow study on you. Make sure that when you are eating and drinking you are sitting straight up, eat small bites and take small sips, and sometimes it helps if you do what we call a chin tuck; when swallowing something you have problems with. Tuck your chin toward your chest then swallow. Less likely to have it go "down the wrong pipe". Be very careful with this. If you accidentally aspirated (suck in something to your lungs) you can get aspiration pneumonia, which is very bad. You could also potentially block off circulation to parts of your lung, causing lung tissue to die.

You might need an endoscopy. It easy and painless. I had the same problem but after that not anymore

@A MyFibroTeam Member - Mine isn't so much painful, it literally just doesn't go down properly. What did they determine was the cause of your pain though?
