A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hey guys, I have a question that I will also ask my doc next time I'm in. My doc put me on 50mg Quetiapine At bedtime for sleep. I didn't think anything of it but my pharmacist and my nurse freind have both expressed shock. Apparently it's for psychosis and bipolar. Doctor didn't say anything about those to me directly. Is anybody on this for sleep without the bipolar/psychosis diagnosis. I'm very confused. Thanks!

Members reassured someone confused about being prescribed Quetiapine for sleep rather than bipolar disorder or psychosis, with many explaining that medications originally developed for mental health conditions are commonly repurposed at lower doses to treat fibromyalgia symptoms like insomnia and pain. Several members shared their own experiences taking Quetiapine or similar medications for sleep, noting that while it can be effective, some experienced vivid nightmares during the first week or two, and one member cautioned about developing dependence after struggling to sleep without it. A recurring theme was encouragement to communicate openly with their doctor about the prescription and to give the medication time to work while monitoring for side effects.

I am not on that particular drug but I take several medications that were designed to treat things like bipolar disorder and seizures. These drugs just happened to have side effects that could help other problems. Many anti-depressants were found to decrease joint and muscle pain. Which was great since people with fibromyalgia have high instances of depression.

I was given a dose of an anti depressant and questioned it. I was told that I was only taken a small dose so it acts as a relaxant to help sleep. It's used x 8 for depression. x

Sorry to hear you anxieties about the pills but surely he wouldn't have put you on them if he didn't think they would help!!
Have you tired them yet to see if they work??
