I am currently way way over weight. My fibro makes it hard for me to exercise like I need to. I remember only 5-6 yes ago being able to move furniture and clean my house, now if I even try to stand at the sink to do dishes I am hurting for 2 days. I need to lose at least 100 lbs. Has anybody else that has lost weight noticed a difference in pain level or is this just progression of the fibro?
Also if you have lost the weight what has helped you the most?

It's all about what you eat. Cut calories and eat clean. Working out makes you loose weight faster but it really comes down to what you eat. Make small weekly/biweekly changes to change what you eat. It's hard but you got this! Keep your head up :)
Oooh yes meds definitely can add wt. gain. That's where I had put all my wt on from were medications I had to take daily d/t migraines. No matter how much I walked et my eating habits didn't change..I don't eat after 6pm or eat junk food. Only think back then I drank a lot of soda d/t working midnights et living on 2-4 hrs of sleep a day. I finally made a decision to go off of that medication esp. because 50+ lbs in less than couple yrs. et with diabetes running in the family I didn't need that issue. It was a tough decision for me since med did help some of the migraines, but I suffer from couple of different kinds, but a glad I made in the long run.
Yes i too was over weight and went on low carb high fat diet. Aka atkins and lost 80 lbs in a yr. Having fm has made it in possible to exercise and so with atkins i didnt have to. Just cut out sugar and carbs. As in any thing with flour or like rice. Id have to say losing the weight did help. If only in my mind. I think i look better so i felt better, but with that bein said i still am in pain 24/7 but i think the weigh lose help some as im able to get around better than carrying all that excesss weight
I had to lose about 47 lbs, and I had never had to "diet" before in my life. The weight piled on because, frankly, I was eating whatever I pleased (tons and tons of sugar) and because the FM slowed me down (plus other health issues) the weight suddenly piled on fast. I did not know how to diet and asked a friend. Then asked a family member. Then read a book basically saying Atkins diet is the way to go.
For me, it ended up being a matter of cutting sugar out of my life. First I had to let go of the "obvious" sugar stuff. I wouldn't let go of Hershey's Kisses. Part of the reason for this, was I had no other "dessert" I could eat because I also have Celiac Disease (sensitivity to gluten at 10 ppm!). Finally, realizing I wasn't losing any weight and knowing it was my Hershey Kisses "addiction", I finally out of desperation replaced them with hard candies that were gluten free. It worked like a charm. I was able to lose the rest of the 47 lbs I had gained.
Strangely enough, I lost interest in hard candies and did not wish to eat chocolate!
In fact, after being without sugar long enough, when I get a little sugar I noticed there is an after-taste. Who'd have thought that?
It's sort of like: I take the first bite/drink of sugar, and sugar takes the next bite/drink of sugar. It's so addictive. The good news, at least for me was, that after three years of trying, once I broke the habit, I realized I don't NEED sugar. Wow!
And I noticed that while the pain did not seem to subside at all, there was an unexpected benefit: I could get up and down so much easier. Which, in turn, led to me being more active. Which, in turn, led me to lose a little more weight. Which, in turn, made me have more energy.
Since pain can eat up energy, it was energy I desperately needed.
Best wishes to you. Keep trying. If you can only do a little, do that. Build more on it later. Bottom line here: I had to change my eating Life Style. Just dieting doesn't work because at some point, you go off the diet. Starving is only the beginning of the body's fight to get that weight back and find a balance. It worked better for me to eat unprocessed, healthy food without sugar additives of any kind (hard to find, but starting raw then adding your own KNOWN ingredients) helped tremendously for me! I made each choice individually, asking myself "Are you willing to say a permanent 'good-bye' to this?" Because it doesn't do to go back to old eating habits.
That all said, it's hard to keep weight off. But not impossible. Making myself eat "real food" like a balanced meal if I thought I was "hungry" made me more aware that I was not really hungry....not for food.
So I replaced a lot of that with books, friends, movies, music, things that bring me comfort without adding the weight.
Cut out caffeine for sure. I use to be a big pop/soda drinker et haven't drank it for over 2 yrs now. Counted calories on a calorie tracker et I was walking 3+ miles a day until my other unknown health issues at the time. But I lost over 40lbs et have kept it off. I feel losing the wt. has helped with some of the pain but I am a small boned person in the first place et I weighed more than I had with my pregnancies. Still would like to lose more but lucky if I can walk 6 blocks now:( Good luck to you et God bless.
