Members opened up about the deeply intertwined relationship between chronic pain and depression, with many describing how each condition intensifies the other in a difficult cycle. Several members shared their medication combinations, including antidepressants like Prozac, Citalopram, Mirtazapine, and Cymbalta, along with pain management approaches such as Gabapentin, morphine patches, and paracetamol, with one member finding relief by reducing their medications under medical guidance. A recurring theme was fighting the embarrassment and isolation, with strong encouragement to accept help from mental health teams, try counseling or journaling, stay active through gentle exercise like walking clubs, practice positive self-talk, and remember that treating depression is no different than managing any other medical condition.

Oh dear-depression is the norm for us with fibro...you are so right. It is a vicious cycle...we are depressed because we hurt and we hurt more because we are depressed. I have been on ever antidepressant known to mankind....zoloft works best for me but I still fight it all the time. I do my best to push negative thoughts out of my head but at times that does not work. Journaling can help-vent all your sadness. Another things I do is to try to help someone else-that is a great source of joy for me.

You should never be embarrassed for treating your medical condition - and that is what depression is. For me, positive self talk was the most important thing I learned. I find how I refer to everything related to my illnesses makes a huge difference in my mood - ie. every day is an adventure because I know longer know what each day will bring or when asked how I am I say some version of "Thank GD" because it reminds me that I am not alone and to count my blessings

I am bipolar and was diagnosed about 8 years ago before fiber. Pain makes it worse. I take Depakote and Prozac, Mirtazapine to sleep and Klonopin as needed. It is nothing to be embarrassed about. If you had HBP you would not be embarrassed to ask for help. Some meds help with depression and pain like Cymbalta, Gabapentin, etc. Hang in there.

Hi, I used to take 2 different anti depressants and a whole host of pain killers. Between my GP, Consultant and myself we decided to strip back all the meds and only have half the dosage of one anti depressant and paracetamol and a morphone patch to manage the pain. I saw a specialised pain consultant who helped me understand why I was choosing to be in pain as it is natural for us humans to avoid it.

I have to say, it is the best thing I have ever done. The pain is a little worse, but I can deal with that because the dpression is not nearly as bad. I feel so much better and far more optomistic. It is true what they say, less is more.

I hope you find a way that is best for you. I was terrified of changing my meds, but as soon as I realised things were hetting better it lifted my spirits no end.

Good luck.

I would recommend seeing a counseller as well as antidepressants. Exercise is also known to help depression. I joined a regular walking club, I have found this to be beneficial, I feel less isolated, being outdoors and exercising improves my low mood. Was quite surprised how much difference this has made.
