I know from my own experience that both physical and emotional stress can have a big impact on fibromyalgia symptoms. When something difficult happens, it can feel as though the body reacts almost immediately, with pain and fatigue becoming much more noticeable.
Trying to settle those feelings can help, although of course that is easier said than done. I’ve found that slow, deep breathing can be useful in those moments because it helps bring my heart rate down and quieten a racing mind. I also find that lying down in a darkened room, listening to quiet music and really concentrating on it, while slowing my breathing, can help to quieten everything down. Staying there until I can actually feel things beginning to settle is something that works well for me. It takes the edge off things and can help stop the stress from building further.

I’m sorry you had such bad news. Be gentle with yourself and give your mind and body a little extra room to recover from the shock of it.

Hi Melissa this is not a dumb question at all and there's a million things to learn regarding fibromyalgia. First let me apologize for the way you are feeling regarding stress and a stressful circumstance. There is absolutely a connection between the two. It's insightful that you realized it, knowing it ahead of time will give you more opportunities to respond differently if you are allowed to. Stress influences your body as a fibromyalgia individual. I've learned this, I have felt it. There are ways to deflect it.... pacing, breathing exercises, mindfulness, verbalizing it, journaling, mediation and the list goes on. Look for your best solution and take your time. Consistency is the key. I wish you the best☯️💗☀️

Not a dumb question at all — and so sorry to hear you got bad news yesterday. That's really tough, and it makes complete sense that your body is reacting today.

There is absolutely a connection between stress and fibromyalgia flare-ups. Research shows a two-way relationship between the two — stress can trigger or worsen symptoms, and living with fibromyalgia can increase stress levels, creating a difficult cycle. Here's what's happening in your body when stress hits:

- Your central nervous system is already processing pain signals differently with fibromyalgia
- Stress makes that sensitivity even higher, amplifying pain
- Stress also disrupts sleep, which then makes fatigue and pain worse

So yes — bad news yesterday, more pain today is a very real and recognized pattern with fibromyalgia. Some things that may help ride out this flare include:

- Gentle movement like a short walk to release natural feel-good chemicals
- Meditation or slow breathing exercises to calm your nervous system
- Keeping your environment dark and quiet if possible
- Prioritizing rest and sticking to a sleep routine

Be gentle with yourself right now. Your body is carrying a lot. 💙
