Hi everyone, i'm Lindsey. i'm 18 and was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia
I wanted to be a nurse for awhile, but life made me realize it would not be possible for me for many reasons. and at the end of my senior year (after 3 1/2 yrs of medical/nursing classes in hs) i changed my mind. I switched to cosmetology, and signed up for cosmetology school. I was supposed to start around the same time my fibro made itself known. I've already, in the past, had issues with standing (back already sucked… read more

Members responded with warmth and encouragement to a young woman newly diagnosed with fibromyalgia who was searching for career ideas that match her passions for helping people, animals, and activism. Several members suggested desk-friendly or work-from-home options like computer coding, medical transcription or billing, 911 dispatch, and social work or disability advocacy as paths that could offer flexibility and lower physical demands. A recurring theme was to give herself time to understand how fibromyalgia affects her body before making big decisions, with one member sharing that she was diagnosed at the same age and went on to build a fulfilling career in nursing and mental health therapy.

Maybe I'm not answering your question but as far as I know you're not going to make any money by volunteering but you will gain experience and I have no idea how much you'll get paid with activism for a cause . You can learn things by volunteering and that can be to your credit .Find a trade or vocation where you can sit and stand. Remember that whatever you do you want to make a decent living so you can be somewhat independent. There is plenty of information on this subject but we can't always do the kind of work that is idealistic for our personalities. It sounds like you want to make a difference in this world. I hope you find your niche.

If you are still interested in the health field (kinda), you could look into medical transcription/billing. Just a suggestion

@A MyFibroTeam Member, Coding for computers may bring some flexibility. Coders can work from home, which wouldn’t require taxing your energies. It also can pay well. My granddaughter just passed her 911 certification, that might be something you might like. Pay, benefits are very good. They either sit or stand, and you’d be helping people.💞🙏

Hope this might help🤗

I would add, let your self get used to Fibro…see how it affects you. I had Fibro at your age also. I went on to become an RN and worked in a hospital for years. When that became too difficult, I went back to school and earned my MS in mental health and became a psychotherapist, loved it. If you really love nursing, there are many jobs that are available to you…positions not as stressful. You can have a wonderful life! 💓
