A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi everyone. This may seem like a very off the wall question, but has anyone completed a spartan race while battling fibro? My daughter attends a private school and the students are all doing the 5k, and parents are being mandated to also do it as part of the supporting the students. I tried to train yesterday for an hour and im now having the worst flare up ive had in a long time. Any tips?

What about the other children whose parents have health issues that prevent them from participating, what will they do?
Can a relative fill in for you?
Can you bring in a doctor's note?
Seems as though the school would need to avoid negatively impacting your health.
How can the school expect working parents to participate?
Perhaps you need to speak sincerely and directly to the school system president.
Since you really seem to want to be there for your child, someone to push you in a race chair, or a power scooter might be a viable alternative.

Question: What tips are there for training for and completing a Spartan Race with fibromyalgia?

While intense exercise can trigger fibromyalgia flares, there are ways to build up endurance more gradually. Consider these strategies:

• Start with very short training sessions (10-15 minutes) and slowly increase duration
• Focus on low-impact exercises like swimming or water aerobics initially
• Work with a physical therapist to develop a safe training plan
• Take frequent rest breaks during training
• Listen to your body and stop if pain increases significantly
• Consider discussing modifications with race organizers given your health condition Many MyFibroTeam members have found success with gentle exercise progression rather than jumping into intense workouts. Consider exploring options like hydrotherapy or modified training approaches that won't trigger severe flares. Remember that pushing too hard too fast can lead to setbacks - gradual conditioning is key.
