Very informative and helpful! I think you are correct as when I had acupuncture she wasn’t used to patients with fibromyalgia! She targeted the trigger points went quite deep and twisted! Ouch! A matter of choosing a really experienced practitioner who is well recommended!

I have been going to Acupunture for over 22 years every two weeks for fibromyalgia and arthritis pain. I Have a really good acupuncturist. I think with fibromyalgia it is uncomfortable with the needles because you have so much pain everywhere throughout your body. The needles often go in those spots that are triggerpoints. My Acupuncturist does the thinnest needles and she also does not go very deep. I think when you have a bad experience with Acupunture, it could be because they do the “needling” and push the needle in deep to reach the Chi energy and twirl it around and that is very painful. Many Chinese practitioners do needling. I cannot tolerate that. It has to be a light touch. That might be worth telling your Acupuncturist. I firmly believe that having Acupunture help me to work as long as I did until I retired at 57. I honestly did not think I could keep working that long. I have had chronic pain issues since I was 39. I still get flareups. But it seems to help take the edge off my pain and I tend to recover a little faster from flareups. I usually do pretty good the first week and by the second week I am ready for my session. I can tell the difference. Also, the Acupuncturist can work on your general health, any other problems you might have, and they should be assessing you to help you be in Balance. I have a history of chronic back pain due to arthritis in my back and sacroiliac joints. I tried a chiropractor, and that was extremely painful for me. Some people it works for her. That’s why I ended up with an acupuncturist and that seems to be the best for me. It helps to have somebody who listens to you and hears you when you tell them about your pain. Everyone is different in terms of their bodies and responsiveness. It never hurts to try. I’ve also had physical therapy for my back pain related to arthritis. The stretching I do from the Physical Therapy daily! Once I had a physical therapist try deep tissue massage for my fibromyalgia. That made my pain completely unbearable, and I had to quit that after one session! I could not tolerate it. Some of the best things for fibromyalgia for me are stretching and moving as much as I can. Resting in between tasks that tire me out. Trying to walk daily & use the pool for swimming and water exercises several times a week. Medications don’t do anything for me. I do take a medicine for my arthritis and a muscle relaxer for my back pain which is related to arthritis. I take nothing for my fibromyalgia.

@A MyFibroTeam Member thank you for your comment. Definitely some Acupuncturist are not familiar with fibromyalgia. I’m sorry to hear that your practitioner went deep and did the twisting thing. That is very painful. I’m glad by Acupuncturist listened to me and worked with me. If you do try it again, maybe talk with the person about your condition and what might be helpful, like a smaller (thinner) needle, and no needling (twisting needle deep).
