What Type Of Jobs Do You Have?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am working now, but on STD and thinking of doing something else that fibro does not get in the way of and pays the same. Also I have read that fibromyalgia does not get worse. My symptoms started about a year and a half ago and seems to have gotten worse on some days. Maybe I am experiencing a worse flare. This is what will prevent me from doing my current job. So what else is there?

Members shared their diverse work backgrounds—from ICU nurses and chemists to hairstylists and case managers—while overwhelmingly confirming that their fibromyalgia has progressed over time, contradicting the notion that it does not worsen. Many described the difficult decision to leave careers they loved due to increasing pain, fatigue, and physical limitations, with some now on disability and others finding ways to continue working through workplace accommodations like specialized chairs, frequent movement breaks, and reduced workloads. A recurring theme was the unpredictable nature of flares, the toll fibromyalgia takes on daily functioning, and the importance of self-compassion, workplace support, and exploring options like physical therapy or swimming to help manage symptoms.

I'm a Case Manager working for DWP, every day is difficult with being sat down but I had an O/H assessment done so I can get up for a walk every 40 minutes, have a specialised chair, and the best is a roller bar mouse so I don't have to grip a standard mouse all day. Plus I'm not expected to do as much work as my colleagues but I have been able to keep up so far. By the time it gets to Friday it's tough but luckily everyone is really lovely at work. Then Saturday is spent mostly asleep and feeling beaten but I'm grateful I can manage to work full time. ☺️

I retired because of fibro symptoms really took a toll on trying to teach in an elementary setting. I would say my fibromyalgia has progressed with old age.
