How Many Of You Consider Fibro An Autoimmune Disorder?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

From what I've read online and have been told by many doctors is that fibro is not an autoimmune disorder..yet..when I read a lot of what people with fibro say about their story with having it. They almost always refer to it as an autoimmune disease. I don't just because of what I've been told by doctors. Thoughts?

From my years of research and 4 rheumatologists, fibromyalgia is NOT an autoimmune disease.

I have heard from my Fibro pain professor/ specialist it is not an autoimmune disorder so I don't say it is to people. I just say i have a lowish immune system, which i've always had.

A lot of people also say Fibro is to do with inflamation which i was told by my specialist that it is not. If anti-inflamation meds are helping my specialist said its highly likely that that person either has something else on top of the fibro or has been misdiagnosed. My specialist tested my inflamation levels for 2 years, every 3 months they tested it and at no stage were they high.

There is so much mixed information out there. Even specialists have different opinions depending on if they keep up to date with latest research.

I do. It behaves like autoimmune in my opinion. And the autoimmune paleo diet has helped me most.

In autoimmune disorders, the body begins to attack itself as the immune system mistakenly identifies healthy cells as a dangerous virus or harmful bacteria. In response, your body makes autoantibodies that destroy healthy cells. The attack causes damage to tissues and often inflammation at the affected site.

Fibromyalgia doesn’t qualify as an autoimmune disorder because it doesn’t cause inflammation. There also isn’t any sufficient evidence indicating fibromyalgia causes damage to bodily tissues.

Recent research indicates that it is probably an autoimmune disease
