I sort of cup my ear between my thumb and finger so that it's really not resting on the pillow.

I can only lie on my right side because of my left shoulder pain. I have to sleep with ear plugs and total darkness, but I sometimes have bad ear pains on the side I sleep on. I also have to hold my cheek to help my sinuses whilst I fall asleep. I always wake up with really bad neck and shoulder ache, worse if I sleep heavily or for too long. I wish I had an answer. Sleep is both the best and the worst part of fibromyalgia. You have to get the balance so right.
Best of luck
