How do you know the difference? It’s worrisome also to think it could be the onset of Alzheimers and we wouldn’t even know it because everyone says brain fog comes with fibromyalgia and also with hypothyroidism.
I'm constantly doing things like making a sandwich and put meat in fridge, go looking for cheese and find I put it in the cupboard.
I try and say "hey look at the snow! "
Comes out " well look at the toast!"
My brain won't let me do tons of things. I did have tons of altizmers test because they thought I was starting it at 47yrs old. They said my memory is fine, so must be brain fog.
It's a bit of both when you're my age (60) but when I was in my 30s and first was diagnosed--it was more obvious that it was fibro fog.
My grandmother was given a verbal test years ago for Alzheimers vs. dementia. She was given 4 different things to remember. Like Yellow Ribbon, Blue Dress, Green Basket and Red Flower. The neurologist left the room for about 15 minutes and returned. He asked her: "Do you remember what I asked you to?" She repeated the 4 things, not exactly but he then told my mom that IF it were Alzheimers, she would have said "You didn't ask me to remember anything". Now this was 15+ years ago but that has stood out with me. There may be other tests that they can do now, as well, but that is a basic test that he felt would differentiate. I think that's great to know as well. My grandfather died when I was a Freshman in high school and he had Alzheimers so I have been extremely affected by it and always looking to learn more since then.
We don't know the difference until we would get to that point. If I go into a room and forget what I went for, that's ok. When I go into a room and don't know where I am, I think that is a real problem. I also have hypothyroidism, along with, GIRD IBS ect ect. I have something that sounds so crazy, that I don't tell healthy people about it . It's called nutcracker esophagus. It's hard enough for them to understand fibromyalgia and not think I'm just making up stuff. We have every body part or system involved that only fibromyalgia people can understand. Good luck in your journey.
I'm one of the oldest members here and used to be considered smart! (Mensa member). Yet, just yesterday I did the very dumbest thing - to "fill out a load in the washer" I combined a fleece "Santa" throw (newly purchased) with a pair of black pants! The only good thing that happened was I was smart enough to turn the pants inside out, so only the wrong side was covered with fuzz! My caregiver used my sticky roller and took the time to get it all out but asked that I PLEASE not do that again! DUH.....!! I knew better. I am calling it brain fog, my doctor assures me I am not getting dementia or Alzheimers (yet!). My Fairweather Absentee Husband has worsening dementia, and only one to a family is allowed!
