How Do You Manage Self-care While Working Full Time And Living With Fibro?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

This last year i’ve worked really hard at self care as a result of being the most unwell i’ve ever been. My symptons have been a bit better recently and the introduction of Lyrica has help too. So self care and new meds have combined with lots of sick time off work and a slump in business (ie extra time off), which has improved my health.

Now i’m feeling a bit more in control of things i’ve been back to work, business is pickkng up, everything is great.

This next part I feel like i’m whinging… read more

The only answer I can give is to literally stop what you are doing. Stop. It isn’t simply tiredness that stops you in your tracks. It’s sheer exhaustion and fatigue. There is a difference. Even when the energy is there. Don’t use it all up. Do a bit. Stop. Do a bit more. Stop. During your stopping period. Have a coffee. Flick through a magazine. Put on Netflix. Close your eyes. Then and only then can you move into the next thing. Other stuff can wait. There’s always tomorrow and the day after that. 💙

I have learned to limit myself and make priorities. Accepting your new condition is hard but once you do there is lots to be grateful for. Find new things to enjoy that don't involve a lot of activity and be honest with friends and family about your new abilities. It isn't easy, but it can be done.

I'm still learning how to find my balance and developing boundaries to make self care a priority. It's very hard, because I work full time and directly with the general public, which I have found is becoming more and more draining for me. I think listening to your body is a number 1 priority, when you feel tired or fatigue set in, allow yourself to rest, and sit still. One thing that helps me is to listen to uplifting music to help my mind be calm to get thru the day. Lately I have found that working a full time week is getting harder and harder, so I am finally to the point of thinking I may need to move to part time. I hope you are able to find things that help you. Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to do something you enjoy at least once per day. We are warriors, fighting our own bodies daily, always remember the power we all possess 😊

Wow. What is self-care? I have been living with this for almost 20 years and I have had to work full time. I cannot think some days but I carry our insurance. I do work at home so I can go lay down on my lunch. I have to be medicated to function. Do I still have all the pain flares, brain fog, insomnia, pain: absolutely. I just cannot have another option at this point.
