Painful Swollen Tongue Sensation

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Marietta, GA

Hello does anyone ever have what feels like a painful swollen tongue and it also feels like it's harder to swallow? This seems to happen to me from time to time and when it does, my tongue feels sore and I don't even really want to talk. It feels most sore on the sides of my tongue towards the back. When it gets this way, I feel like I have to concentrate harder on speaking so I don't stumble over my words.

Before you ask, I have already been tested for everything under the sun. Everything… read more

Members connected over the uncomfortable experience of painful, swollen tongue sensations, sharing a wide range of possible causes including teeth grinding, TMJ, jaw misalignment, Sjögren's Syndrome, candida overgrowth, and food sensitivities to items like pineapple, kiwi, or MSG. Several members described practical experiences with nightguards for bruxism, though some noted the challenge of increased dry mouth, while others mentioned being tested for overlapping conditions like Sjögren's that can cause similar dry mouth and tongue soreness. A recurring theme was the validation of feeling less alone in an often-dismissed symptom, with members offering reassurance that tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, and concentration issues with speech are real and shared experiences within the fibromyalgia community.

Just count on the potential of everything to possibably swell at some point. That way when it does you are not surprised.

Yes it happens to me and It could be for multiple reason 1) your tongue is swelling or may not be swelling but in turn causing you to bite your cheeks, gums and tongue at nights or during the day, It doesn't have to be a literal bite but having the soft tissue of a tongue press against hard coated teeth, its going to get injured and sore. Causes for this includes: teeth grinding, jaw misalignment, anxiety, bruxism etc. Should heel after 3 to 4 days. You may also experience pain in the jaw bones as well due to Fibro.
