Has Anyone Had To Leave Work Because Of Fibromyalgia?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I think I'm going to have to leave employment but I'm not sure what to do for income. My husband works but we've always been a two income family. Has anyone successfully gotten on disability with fibromyalgia in NYC?

Members shared their experiences navigating the difficult decision to leave work due to fibromyalgia, with many emphasizing that obtaining disability benefits often requires hiring a specialized attorney, extensive medical documentation from multiple specialists, and persistence through initial denials that can take two to three years to resolve. Several members described the emotional and financial toll of transitioning from two incomes to one, with some noting that reduced stress ultimately proved more valuable than the lost income, even though it meant returning to counting every penny. A recurring theme was the frustration of an unpredictable approval process, the importance of documented visits with rheumatologists, pain specialists, and mental health providers, and the solidarity found in knowing others have successfully fought for and won the benefits they deserved.

I have been a sufferer for many years I left my job last February after a major flare up I had IBS,sleep deprivation,Excruciating pain, swelling of knees yea everything that could go wrong did. I had a FMLA for 6 years but being the supervisor it was difficult to leave or take off time for work not to mention all the stress.
Anyway I immediately contact the social security office and applied. I got denied the first time. but did get it after that..I contacted a lawyer to assist which helped it did cost 3% of my back wages.
I think you need ALOT of medical evidence ,Alot of visits to the doctor, tests follow up..
It has been and does continue to be a REAL disease. I am lucky to have found a good RA doctor . I still have all the same health issues but at least I dont have the stress. I was the bread winner so, Financially we are now back to when we just started out, counting every penny , to me my health is more important than any $$.
hope this helps

I agree with ChrisJeannotte,
I had a lengthy documented history. Several different doctors, including mental health specialists, rheumatologists, pain specialists.... still the only way to disability without obvious physical/mental hardship (whatever that may be- I feel stupid even writing it) is to obtain a lawyer. Good luck my friend. ❤️

@A MyFibroTeam Member, I had to leave my job several years ago in Buffalo, NY. I was a successful career woman in law enforcement with the federal gov’t. I applied for disability and was initially denied until I obtained a lawyer and was subsequently given disability for the past few years. Since there is no cure for Fibro, my case had been renewed once already. The cost of the lawyer was thousands, but still I was able to get back pay for the time lost at work. I was robbing Peter to pay Paul for a long time. It is a terrible position to be in- standing in front of a judge and articulating why you should receive assistance. But, I was worth the fight and so are you. My husband is the sole bread winner.
Please remember you did not choose this. Illness comes to us all in one form or another. You can and should put into place what you need to secure your life and family. Please msg me with any questions.
With love,
K
