Is This A Flare?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Saturday and Sunday I felt pretty okay. I had decided earlier in the week to take a methylpredinisone dose pack (the one that lasts for like 5 days) to see if that would help with any of my issues. It seemed to help some with the twitching I was experiencing in my right deltoid but beyond that, the normal nerve pain in the same spots was not affected at all.

Yesterday, my son came down with a cold but I didn't think much of it because it wasn't severe. No fever, etc. So this AM when I woke… read more

@A MyFibroTeam Member do you get weird nerve sensations and does one side of your body have more issues than the other? I always worry I've been misdiagnosed because most of my issues reside on my left side but today they are all over.. I think a common cold can be a lot for a person with fibromyalgia to manage. Today I just feel plain rotten and just yesterday, I felt fine. I will say this, I did drink a couple of beers yesterday which I haven't done in about three weeks so that could have caused issues too. I also didn't get to bed until 1PM and woke up at 6:30 but jeez, this is terrible. I feel awful

Before I got a fms diagnosis, I thought I was getting the flu repeatedly- only the bad body aches and pains. Now I know that’s what a flare up feels like for me. It happens when my body gets stressed from something and a cold might bring it on

I am miserable when I get any kind of bug - something minor (i.e. the common cold) to a healthy person is full body hell for me.

I know fibromyalgia often causes increased sensitivity to temperature changes, and one of the things a cold can mess with, even in a healthy person, is your body's ability to accurately gauge temperature - causing shivering and chills, etc.,..., so I think that for us that symptom is much, MUCH worse and results in far more severe body/muscle aches as a result and creates a domino-effect from there, increasing fatigue as we struggle to keep our pained and strained joints functioning through as the "bug" runs its course.

I know you said you were fine yesterday and woke up feeling terrible, but the troubled sleep is a big part of it, too. If I don't sleep well, I'm very likely to feel sluggish and sore with body aches and chills even without the flu or any other seasonal illness in the picture - bad sleep seems to amplify EVERYTHING and just INVITE pain into my system.

Of course, this is all just my speculation based on my experience.
I hope it helps make you feel less alone in your symptoms if nothing else!

@A MyFibroTeam Member, yes, when I feel like I'm coming down with a cold, it's usually not but I do go into a flare! Then the cold symptoms go away. Several times a year I wake up feeling like I'm catching a cold but it goes away too soon to be a cold. Don't think it's a cold! Feel better soon!

Good morning Amy, yes it could be a flare up. Sometimes it might not be a cold at All. Just fibro flare. You can feel good one day and the next can feel like a Mac truck has hit you. Flu symptoms are what you feel like in a bad flare day! Heat helps me when this is going on with me. Like a heating pad or if you have a heated throw or electric blanket they work miracles on giving me some relief. Nothing gives me pain free. But I feel some better. Hopefully this helps you with understanding this ugly issue we have. Soft hugs 🤗

Shirley
