Pain Underneath Ribs? Not Gallbladder? Anyone Else?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have this HORRIBLE reoccurring pain on my right hand side below my ribs which occasionally travels lower and now across my stomach about halfway. NO ONE can figure out what it is. I have had repeated blood tests, multiple ER/urgent care trips where the initial diagnosis is a gall bladder problem, then none is found whatsoever. I have had CT scans, a HIDA scan; noone can figure it out, so my PCP has put me on Prilosec for GERD, which has not helped or stopped the pain. It can be gone then come… read more

Members connected over the frustrating experience of mysterious right-side rib pain that resisted diagnosis despite extensive testing, with many sharing that costochondritis, an inflammation of the rib cage often associated with fibromyalgia, was eventually identified as the culprit after initially being suspected as gallbladder issues. Several members offered practical strategies that provided some relief, including anti-inflammatory supplements like turmeric and white willow bark, switching to a whole food plant-based diet while avoiding high-fat meals and trigger foods, using heating pads and ice packs, massaging the sternum, and in some cases removing the gallbladder even when tests appeared normal. A recurring theme was the exhausting cycle of ER visits and inconclusive scans, the challenge of distinguishing fibromyalgia pain from other conditions, and the importance of advocating for oneself while experimenting with different approaches since what works varies greatly from person to person.

After dealing with these kinds of pains for years, especially bad when in full blown flare, I finally got a diagnosis of costochondritis on Monday. Sometimes the pain is so bad it has me moaning which rather surprises me when I hear myself, but yeah, that's how bad it can get. I find thatt for me the only things that help are 1) massaging the sternum, 2) a large heating pad, and 3) sleep. Most of the time, by the time I wake up, the worst of it has faded. I also take Curamed and Curamin. They are potent and work.

Oh I have seen some people have good results from a backpod. There are posts on YouTube. It is extremely pricey so I haven't tried it yet.

@A MyFibroTeam Member I have had tons of tests also 4 er visits and was told it was my gallbladder. I had it removed and the pain became constant and made things worse. I then had a scope and was told I have gastritis and alot of acid and inflammation in my stomach. Put me on a ppi which did not help at all. Then my surgeon said it's costiocondritis. I have tried tumeric with black pepper, fish oil, plant based protein, vitamin d3, vitamin e, essential oils, all kinds of muscle rubs, streatches, meditation, ginger and tummeric tea, lemmon water and honey and recently am taking it's called inflame x. It has white Willow bark, yucca root, ginger root, bromelain, boswellin and tummeric root. This has been steady for me the last 4 months. The inflame x is no miracle but is the only thing so far that seems to help just a bit. Other than that my heat pad and laying flat on the floor is temporary releif. Eating a healthy anti inflamed diet for 4 months does help the sharp pain and I lost 40 pounds. I am so sorry I wish I could tell you something has helped. I am forever searching and trying different things but the band and rib pain is still here. I too am looking for help. I'll definitely post if I find something. 💮

I used to get this!! I was terrified to eat food for almost a year bc I had tremendous pain for hours afterward. I went whole food plant based and avoid high amounts of fats in a single meal bc I found that to be a trigger in addition to wheat products, meat and dairy. Now, I occasionally have an item off my naughty list but I usually get reminded of why I cut them out. I would try an elimination diet to rule out food as a culprit. I didn’t think it was food at first bc it seemed random but then I learned that my digestion is WAY slower than a normal person. Good luck!!

I am so glad you asked this!! I started getting these pains in my lower stomach and right in my ribs. It even goes around into my back where the ribs are. I’ve been thinking of going to the doctor but I just know it’s fibro!! I had my gall bladder out thirty years ago so I know it’s not that! Yes anyone with any sure relief, please post as I think I’m going crazy! I’m so sick and tired of all these symptoms and whining about them! I’ve even had my husband put Voltaren on my back where I can’t teach and when I ask for his help, I know it’s bad! Help!!!
