MD Calls It FM But Won’t Make Referrals For Further Tests
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anyone else have a difficult time with their GP around referrals and testing to get an actual diagnosis? She tells me it sounds exactly like FM but then says “you don’t want that label”!! I don’t care about the label!! I want to know what I have and get some help treating it!

The Fibro Fix by David M. Brady is a book you should get. He is truly an expert at diagnosing Fibromyalgia and points out that most doctors are not good at diagnosing it. He will help you distinguish between Fibromyalgia and many other illnesses which are similar.

Your doctor cannot just assume that you have fibromialgia without ruling out different health problems that may cause your symptoms. Depending of your symptoms he or she needs to do a thorough lab and imaging if necessary to make sure nothing is overlooked, such as thyroid, diabetes, heart, anxiety disorder, arthritis and the list goes on.

I would definitely see about getting a referral for a rheumatologist. I didn't get much help from any of the drugs they use for fibromyalgia. Mostly bad side effects and no help with pain. I'm taking marijuana and that's the only thing that has helped.

@A MyFibroTeam Member, having had fibro for over 20 years I can definitely say that knowing I had it made me not only depressed, but angry as hell. I already had 2 incurable diseases. A third one was overwhelming. I learned very quickly that no one cared about any labels I had, because most people are just too involved in their own lives. The only way that we get the kind of attention we don't want, is to be so obviously different from others we threaten them in some psychological way. The threats are usually irrational like racism is. And obviously there are all kinds of pre-judging that goes on, but only some people really make issues out such things.
In my own journey I learned, I learned that despite the many labels I have, if I try to treat others first as human beings then they are more likely to do the same for me. It took me awhile though. I guess I was stubborn. But it really is true. Most of the time, what you put out into the world will be reflected back at you. So if you hang a label around your neck (metaphorically speaking), that label will stare right back at you.
I don't know you, but I do know this: no matter what you've done, or thought, or think your going, you are a wonderful, noble, beautiful being first and foremost. Please don't forget that.
