Members rallied around someone whose primary care doctor dismissed a fibromyalgia diagnosis made by a specialist, with the overwhelming consensus being to find a new primary care physician who respects specialist expertise and believes in fibromyalgia. Several members shared that rheumatologists, rehabilitation doctors, or fibromyalgia clinics are typically better equipped to diagnose and treat fibromyalgia than general practitioners, and some suggested asking the diagnosing specialist to send documentation to the primary doctor or seeking out a GP who specializes in chronic pain conditions. A recurring theme was frustration with doctors who refuse to acknowledge diagnoses they cannot easily explain on paper, and fierce encouragement that patients dealing with fibromyalgia deserve providers who will work with them rather than against them.

Different people will diagnose with different things. Doctors seem to not want to diagnose something that they cant explain on paper. Welcome to our community!

Get a new primary doctor. That would be what i would do. We deal with too much with fibro so you don't need to deal with any doctor that does not believe you.

My GP diagnosed my fibro on my first visit. She is very knowledgeable on the subject. I feel very lucky to have her.
Maybe you should have the doctor that diagnosed you send a letter off to your GP. And if your GP doesn’t except that then I would look to find a new one.
I get so mad when I hear stories like this. Our doctors are supposed to work with us not against us.

@A MyFibroTeam Member Hi, Lisa. The rheumatologist is the one that gives the DX of fibromyalgia. And if he/she prescribed Cymbalta, which is the med for fibromyalgia. I would suggest you look for a primary care that believes in fibromyalgia. You see fibromyalgia is not something that a primary care doctor really knows about. But a rheumatologist would.
