I have fibro, plus a chronic infection causing more chronic pain. I do have depression and anxiety and had some counselling and am on meds for it , as well as meds for pain, and meds for the chronic bone infection (painful as well). I use a walker and wheelchair. If I cry or say I'm in pain the psychiatrist comes up because someone read an article a Dr. wrote or a Dr. they heard about says that's the answer. I just don't know how to handle it. You don't have to see a psychiatrist for fibro treatment. Seeing a counsellor or psychologist is much better. Psychologist will teach you tips and tricks for self help as well as listen to you. I have seen a psychologist and found him great. ๐
If you see a psychologist and you don't feel comfortable with them get another refferal from your gp
Keep doing this until you find the right one for you.
Maybe try to call the institute of psychologists and ask them if they can give you the name of a psychologist who specializes in fibro and pain management.
Good luck with everything. Hugs.๐
Good luck with your search.
Find something you enjoy, maybe a cat or dog. Honestly helps to laugh, it does good like a medcine!
Speaking as a former psychiatric nurse you may need a psychiatrist for treating the depression or anxiety but I have found that psychotherapy is many times more important because we just aren't equipped with the coping skills needed to deal with the roller coaster that are lives are trying to deal with on a daily basis.
@A MyFibroTeam Member Anyone that is in pain is depressed ! i have never seen a person in pain jumping up and down saying oh goody i hurt ! love peace joy michele
I get so tired of people trying to tell me this is a mental disorder. It's because they've heard that fibro patients also suffer from depression or anxiety so they just assume. I try to explain if that were the case, I was diagnosed with anxiety 12 years ago, but it's always been there, but the fine didn't start until 3 years ago. I see a counselor for my anxiety who is familiar with fibro, but she treats that as something totally separate from my anxiety. There's my anxiety issues and then there's coping skills when nothing is helping my pain.
