Members exploring new mattress options for fibromyalgia found that preferences varied widely, with some favoring Tempur-Pedic memory foam (especially the Tempur Cloud 22), adjustable beds for personalized support, gel mattresses for those who find memory foam too soft or hot, and even waterbeds for pressure relief. Several members cautioned against Sleep Number beds due to strong rubber odors from foam components and excessive heat retention, while others noted that gel mattresses can be pricey but worth it for comfort. A recurring theme was the importance of testing mattresses in person, as what works for one person may not work for another, and considering factors like temperature regulation, ease of getting in and out of bed, and personal sensitivity to materials.

Do not get a sleep number bed. They look great and feel great in the stores but you don’t see them disassembled. We bought one and were asked if we wanted it set up, we said yes. It isn’t one solid box spring and mattress. Instead it’s many smaller components made of foam rubber. I don’t know about you but fibro has made my sense of smell much more sensitive. The outgassing from the rubber smelled so terrible I slept in our guest room for at least three months. When I finally could sleep on it I was always very hot because foam rubber doesn’t breathe. I couldn’t wait to get rid of it.

I also had a sleep number bed. At first it was great, but after awhile I could hardly get up out of bed in the morning, but I never thought part of the problem could be the bed... figured it was just the fibro! Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention!

I have an adjustable bed and find it really good, and depending on which bit of you hurts at any one time , it gives you an option of raising or lowering upper or lower body to support or ease the pressure on that area. Expensive but well worth it for better sleep. 🛌

We had a waterbed years ago before I developed fibro. We loved it until I broke my leg, it was a severe fracture that required surgery and I was in the hospital for four days. When I came home I was only allowed to get up to go to the bathroom, doctor and PT. Getting out of that bed caused huge problems and pain as I couldn’t get any leverage to push up and off with my good leg. I ended up on the bed in the guest bedroom that had a regular mattress and box spring.
