Lyrica & Cymbalta Long Term Damage
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m taking Lyrica & Cymbalta to treat my fibromyalgia. I’ve heard that these drugs are very difficult to get off because of the intense withdrawal symptoms and that they can cause brain damage, Alzheimer’s, etc

My dr did not explain this to me before prescribing and now I’m a little concerned that i may be limiting my pain whilst damaging my brain.

Please advise if these risks are real and please share your experiences.

I’ve weaned off Lyrica with no problem. Weaning off Cymbalta is difficult but doable. I used nasal decongestant, Tylenol, anti anxiety meds and small doses of an SSRI (Lexapro) to help with the withdrawal symptoms. Took about 5-7 days to stop withdrawals. I’ve never heard of actual brain damage from either med. I’m back on both meds again.

Thank you for asking these excellent questions!

I am prescribed 100 mg of pregabalin up to three times a day, and I am OK with the fact that I do not have to take the entire dosage… Most days I can skate by on one pregabalin and a Cymbalta… Some days I have to take two pre-Gabalin That seems to help me cook along OK with very little pain and a bit more energy

I don’t know why, but one of my specialists put me on Aricept and Namenda, which as you probably know are both anti-Alzheimer‘s drugs.

Yeah, I certainly don’t want brain damage or Alzheimer‘s, and at the same time I can’t live with suicidal pain and horrific light sensitivity and the inability to walk without a walker or being in a wheelchair… I take vitamin and mineral supplements and I do the best I can… I hope things go well for you! 💐😃

When people talk about “withdrawal“ I do not understand what they are referring to… Do they mean that the pain and sensitivity symptoms come back? If I delay preGabalin for over 36 hours, then I do experience a return of hellish pain, but I do not consider that a withdrawal.“… I hope that helps

I was prescribed pregabalin by my doctor, but I haven't taken them yet...got them in June.
I just recently have started losing weight! I really don't want to gain it back. I was afraid weight gain may be one of the side effects😕
