On the activity page you can see what people are going through and add them to your team. I think if you click on their name you can read their stories and there is a button which asks if you want to add to your team. If I am adding to my team I like to comment to the person and say a little something. If you go on meet others section it lists people too. Hope you get the hang of it soon.

I just clicked add team, then search for people in my area and clicked on add to team.. I'm really new to this too and don't really get the team thing but I'm adding people to my team apparently hahaha
