I have heard of aerobics and yoga instructors who had to give up their jobs, marathon runners who can't run marathons anymore, PE teachers and coaches who had to give up their jobs, and all had to find new less physically demanding professions. Never in all the literature I've read have I seen fibro is caused by sitting too much and not moving enough. I have read it is possibly caused by nerves misfiring too often, or that the cause is unknown, or that underlying illnesses including monoโ€ฆ read more

Members firmly rejected the notion that fibromyalgia is caused by sitting too much, with several sharing that they were yoga instructors, hairdressers, or athletes who developed fibro despite highly active lifestyles, and many emphasized that the condition is linked to an oversensitized central nervous system rather than inactivity. Several members offered compassionate perspective on why the friend might be clinging to this theory, suggesting she may be newly diagnosed and struggling to accept a condition she cannot control, and recommended gently providing her with accurate medical resources and reputable websites to help redirect her understanding. A recurring theme was the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive, informed people who validate rather than dismiss the reality of fibro, while also acknowledging that movement can help manage symptoms even though it absolutely does not cause the condition.

Those types of people make me want to go to the dark side. I'm so sick of being labeled "lazy" (basically) and that's why we're sick and can't get better. I was training to enter a body building competition and hitting the gym every day as well as working full time before I got sick. My own father refuses to talk to me until I go back to work. He told me to "suck it up" and get to work because I'm pretty much an embarrassment.
So yeah, no... That's complete BS.

It sounds like your friend needs you to educate her. ๐Ÿ™‚
There are a few theories circulating about what can trigger FM, but the underlying mechanism is a chronically oversensitized central nervous system, making our nerves act like hyperactive children. This is why so many Fibro sufferers benefit from using a TENS machine, becuase it is literally overexciting the nerves to the point of wearing them out, much like taking the puppy for a run in the park so it will sleep at night. ๐Ÿ˜Š
If you want to educate her & even yourself (although you sound like you have been doing your own objective research), try ordering a couple of copies of The Fibro Manual by Dr Ginevra Liptan online. I've had my Fibro diagnosis for 6 years, I had been searching for answers for several years before that, and to this day I still challenge the diagnosis as I have had many misdiagnosis along the way, but regardless this booked has helped me to no end. The information online about Fibro is patchy, incomplete, uninformed and seems to vary greatly, but when I read this book it put me on the right track to figuring out the best way to help myself, which is what I desperately needed. Hope this helps you and your Slappable BF!

FM is not proved officially to be genetic but anecdotally I've heard that is often the case. In my family it is. My sister and I both have fibro and my mom used to have some of the symptoms, like severe headaches, before FM even had a name! And if I could venture an educated guess, I would also say that full blown fibro is brought on by incidents in our life that put us on "pain overload", such as an accident or physical condition that causes long term chronic pain..

No, I have never heard this. I have heard that it is hereditary and that it can be brought on by a traumatic event car accident, abusive relationship, loss of someone close, etc.

Thank you so much for responding. If one more person tells me to stop being lazy I may have to hire an attorney!!! I should really plan what to do to cover my tracks just in case! Just kidding:))) Your response reminded me my father was having trouble adjusting until his best friend told him his daughter had the same diagnosis, and between them they decided their hardworking daughters couldn't both be making up the same condition. So they adjusted positively to our problem. Hopefully, your father will come around. I hope so. I finally broke my engagement with someone because he could/would not. I was even on disability at the time and asked him if he knew how difficult it was to get on disability. He did, but he could not reconcile the fact that I "looked normal" with the fact that I was not. Men and their lack of ability to do critical thinking! Love, light, pain free days and something your heart really desires to you! Your really made my day, week and month!!!!!
