Members deeply empathized with the longing for life before fibromyalgia, sharing the profound grief of losing careers, relationships, physical activities, and independence. Several members described the painful but necessary process of letting go of their former lives and building new ones around quieter activities, supportive relationships, better sleep, mental health treatment, and accepting their changing limitations. A recurring theme was that while the adjustment is heartbreaking and the loss feels like bereavement, there is hope in finding new purpose, learning to cope day by day, and knowing you are not alone in this journey.

This is very difficult, but I've lived with this illness now for roughly eight years ,in my experience I had no choice but to let go of large important parts of my life and create a new life for myself.I had a career in childcare and education which I loved and was doing well in ,but my illness made it impossible to continue working,at the time it absolutely broke me to have to give up some thing I trained so hard for.A relationship also broke down partly due to the strain of being ill.I used to enjoy some sports too , especially ice skating ,running. It really is hard and some what like a bereavement having to come to terms with not being able to do things you could do before.ive had some very dark times and thoughts ,but there is light at the end of the tunnel.ive learned to cope better, met a new partner after being diagnosed,I am enjoying my art and craft hobbies and life does go on . Remember you are not alone x

There's not much more I can add to what everyone else has said. I had to give up my job which I loved, I no longer can drive at night and when I drive in the day I can't go too far (and driving always made me feel better). I've had to give up so much and my friends too, just because I can't make plans ahead of time. I have very very bad days at times but like they say life goes on and I'm just waiting for summer so I can get outside of this house. Try and stay positive. Hugs

Unfortunately we have to give up our old life and make a new one that we are able to tolerate. It takes some time to do this. You have to figure out just what you can do and what you can't. Accept it and do the best that you can. I am sorry you are having such a hard time. Hang in there and remember you are not alone. Each of us have different things we can and can't do. I personally went from being very work oriented and a hard worker to just being able to be a few minutes work and then having to rest before I can do anymore. :(
