Working With Fibro
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was wondering if any of my fibro friends work...? I was just hired for my dream job and I'm seeking some advice for maintaining employment...

I'm a nurse too in the operating room that is a trauma center so it can get really busy. I started having more serious symptoms about 10 years ago and slowly decreased my hours over the years. I now work 4 eight hour shifts with no call. Some days are good and others are not but I find overall moving in best when you have fibro. I think for me a desk job would be more painful. I've learned to manage the stress over the years and take deep breaths often. I have Thermacare wraps and solan pas patches by the droves in my locker! You will find what works for you Madolyn. Congrats on your job!

I work 30 hours a week. I am lucky and my mom is my boss. She also has fibro so she understands when I have flare ups and I understand when she does. We help each other out the best we can. Also 1 other employee has fibro. We all understand. The ones who don't have it know it's real though and when we are having bad flare ups they do extra to help. Talk to your boss. More people have it than you think and more people are willing to help when you're hurting!

I was diagnosed when I was 45 years old and was able to keep up with my very busy desk job for 14 years. It was only when my job became unbearably stressful and I was working 50-60 hours per week that my flares became so severe I had to go out on disability. It has been 6 months now since I worked and I am still very sick. My advice to you is to be certain to listen to your body; when it tells you to slow down to get through a flare please slow down. In my experience this is not something you can just "power through" and not cause real problems later. Congrats on your dream job, I hope all the best for you.

Hi and Congrats! I still work full time but it is literally all I do. I go to work and go home and sit or lay and try not to do anything that will make the next day worse. I start work at 7am and by 9 or ten the pain is bad and I'm ready to leave. The fact that I can't leave when I hurt gives me anxiety and I usually make one or two trips a day to the bathroom to cry. However, my main areas of pain are my hand, wrists, elbows and back and shoulders and I have a desk job. I am hunched over a desk typing most of the time so it makes it really bad. Hopefully your new job will be flexible with you when necessary.
