I've seen so many doctors over the last 2 years, all they want to do is prescribe the same meds over and over. I had a horrible experience with Cymbalta/coming off of Cymbalta. I am too scared to take medications now.

Every doctor I saw threw various unhelpful pills at me. Because there's nothing hospitals can do for flare ups we are just considered an inconvenient burden. Honestly the best help I had was a pain management clinic with a physio therapist who went above and beyond her post helping me with the emotional side of the illness as well. She told me to look in to mindfulness - have a look. I made the decision to come off ALL medication earlier this year and I can honestly say it's the best decision I've ever made. The first month and a half was rough due to withdrawal and your body getting used to no longer relying in medication. I then removed all the toxic stresses in my life - bad boyfriends, tough coursework, social media that made me anxious. I focused on me. When I returned to the doctor and when ive seen other doctors I was suddenly more respected and they listened to me because they realised I wasn't some insecure girl relying on pills. They saw I had demonstrated I want to feel better and be better. They recommended counselling if I needed it but a healthy active gym and diet regime - not necessarily a strict one but really helps give your body a feeling of balance and will remove opiate and nerve blocker tolerance so if you need painkillers again in the future you don't need to take so many. I hope this helps. Message me if you would like to hear more about my experiences or have any questions ๐ sending hugs xxx
@A MyFibroTeam Member honestly it's better to explain you don't want tablets. Maybe it's different due to being in the UK but many doctors are more open minded to alternative therapies and herbal remedies as they understand medication isn't always the best solution. I've been offered acupuncture, hydrotherapy etc. It might be worth looking in to hyperbaric chambers. They've brought them to the UK and they're meant to do wonders.
@A MyFibroTeam Member We have a very similar story! My therapist also recommended mindfulness. I've also been off of all medications for a year this September. I only take muscle relaxers when needed which is only once or twice a month. The only difference is I feel my doctors do not take me serious because I will not take the medications they want me to. I had a doctor tell me recently she could no longer see me because I was not willing to try the medications.
At a doc visit last month, my N.P. said she had some books at home that she was reading about Fibro and that another doctor was going to a conference on it the next week. So although I don't really care for my N.P., at least she's trying to understand. She told me she would call me the next week after she finished one of the books, and she never did. I think it was on foods to avoid with fibro.
I've been dealing with this for 3 years now. I feel so misunderstood. Like they don't understand the impact it has on every aspect of your life. I have been to several specialists besides my GP
who I see pretty much every month. They all say the same thing. Try this med and exercise. I think with the limited knowledge they currently have on Fibromyalgia all they can do is try and help with the symptoms by prescribing meds. Recommending exercise and a healthy diet is a no-brainer. It is generic information they tell every patient regardless of the ailment! Until more research is done I feel like this is what we are stick with. I'm holding onto the hope that they will find a cure. Until then I manage the best I can with some medication, pacing myself and light exercise. It is not a cure.
