I just met with my PM specialist for the 1st time and I don't like him. He dosent think FM is a condition so I plan to ask him when I see him. What is your opinion on FM being a condition as well as what is his plan on treating it.
What happens if I don't like what he says. Should I leave? Has anyone had this done? What dos you do?

Members overwhelmingly encouraged someone whose pain management doctor doesn't believe fibromyalgia is real to find a new physician immediately, emphasizing that having a doctor who acknowledges and understands the condition is essential for proper care. Several members shared their own experiences with doctor shopping, describing how it took time and persistence to find practitioners who were knowledgeable about fibromyalgia, with many finding better results through alternative therapies like osteopathy, naturopathy, and massage alongside traditional medicine. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, researching the condition thoroughly, taking an active role in treatment decisions, and never accepting a doctor who dismisses or minimizes your pain.

Research everything yourself, when you go to the doctor ask him all of the questions you need to ask. If you find he's not the doctor for start looking for a doctor that is right for you. Keep that doctor until you find a doctor you can trust and believe has your best interest at heart.

I may have come across too strong .I'm 68 and have had Fibro for 11 years! At this age you don't let anyone walk all over you. YOU are a SMART POWERFUL women. You, hopefully, have educated yourself so that you can have an intelligent conversation with he/she.
God bless,
Susan

Thank you@ MsMaxwell, You have to advocate for yourself and do not leave it completely up to the doctor. Help them understand your pain and point you in the right direction if they can't help you. Do not feel intimidated by your doctor, let him know you are your advocate and you will not accept any or everything if you don't feel it's in your best interest.

100% agree with @A MyFibroTeam Member. Research everything. I researched for ages until I felt I was up to speed on all the various viewpoints on FM as well as medical learnings - as a result I took my treatment plan into my own hands and went to Osteopathy, Naturopathy and Massage Therapy as my main point of attack which meant I didn't need to worry so much about what my doctor thought of it. But even now at least once a month I will jump online and check if there is anything new. Constantly look for alternative options and new avenues! I have had so many better results from alternative therapies than from Doctors and prescription medications, and the Alternate Health Practitioners are always more open and understanding than their western medicine trained counterparts. Good luck and don't be afraid to take control of your own treatment!!
