Members enthusiastically explained the spoon theory to someone newly learning about it, describing how each daily task (getting up, dressing, showering, eating) costs one spoon from a limited supply, with people living with chronic illness using far more spoons per activity than healthy individuals. Several members shared practical ways they've used the concept to help loved ones understand their daily reality, including printing out Christine's original lupus story, creating visual aids with pennies, posting information at work, and encouraging family members to research fibromyalgia themselves. A recurring theme was the relief of finally having language to describe invisible illness, alongside the painful reality that some family members, coworkers, and friends still refuse to understand or offer support.

There are twelve spoons. For each activity you do such as getting out of bed and taking a shower, consist of one spoon. Eating breakfast and putting dishes away is another spoon taken away. The list continues until you have used up all your spoons for the day. This describes to your friends, family or others to understand what your day is like. If you search online, there is a story of a gal name Christine and she has Lupus. A friend explained to her that her life is like spoons.

I am lucky in a way because my husband attended the class that was offered for fibromyalgia patients and he understands well. Plus both of my kids did a 4H project for the fair last year on Fibromyalgia and learned by researching the internet. One of the things I did was find the spoon theory story online and I printed it off and taped it onto my cubicle at work. Some of my co-workers read it. I also went onto Pinterest and found a whole bunch of info on Fibro and print them off. I post it all over the place at home, work etc. and people come to realization of what Fibromyalgia is.

I learned another tip that we could use to explain to people is use pennies as a way to explain each step of the day.
